Five Guys comes to Tenleytown

More options are arriving for AU students

The famous burger joint Five Guys has applied to join Tenleytown’s food scene at 4200 Massachusetts Avenue (formerly Fire Lake Grill), according to The Northwest Current.

As it stands, food chains dominate much of the Tenleytown food scene, with Cava Mezze Grill, Chipotle, and Chick-Fil-A being some of the hotspots for AU students to visit while in Tenleytown.

Many AU students are looking forward to Five Guys’ arrival; freshman Michael O’Neill said, “They have better fries and I think we need another burger spot to keep Z-Burger in check.”

Local Tenleytown residents however have expressed distaste for the addition of another chain to Tenleytown’s growing food market. Locals are not looking for more fast food but rather small spots with cultivated menus and a variety of tastes, according to the Facebook post about the potential new restaurant.

“I am not the biggest fan of Five Guys,” said AU freshman and Tenleytown Chick-Fil-A employee Justin Santilli, “but I think it will be good for the business of Tenleytown and offer more choices for students.”

Five Guys is renowned as one of America’s favorite fast food spots and currently has seven other locations in the D.C. area, with the closest location to AU on 1400 Irving St. NW. Aside from the burgers, the french fries at Five Guys are a favorite - famously cooked in 100 percent peanut oil. Boxes of free peanuts are readily available in every franchise.

As for vegetarian and vegan options, Five Guys is limited. According to the Five Guys website, only two vegetarian items are offered (veggie sandwiches) and no entirely vegan options exist. More information on the menu and the calorie count of each item can be found here.

Five Guys plans to open in early 2018 according to The Northwest Current.
