Orange is the New Black star Jackie Cruz to speak at AU

Actress will speak about Latinx representation in the entertainment industry

Jackie Cruz of Netflix show “Orange is the New Black” will speak at AU about Latinx representation in the entertainment industry on April 23, the Kennedy Political Union announced on Wednesday.

Cruz is most well known for her role as Flaca on “Orange is the New Black,” but she is also an accomplished singer and songwriter. She was born in Queens, New York and was raised in Los Angeles and Santiago, Dominican Republic.

Cruz became homeless at the age of 16 and was nearly paralyzed in a car accident at 17. Now at 32, Cruz now shares her survival story and experiences with others. Additionally, she will share her experiences as a Latina star in a high-profile TV series.

The event is hosted along with the Latinx American Student Organization (LASO). It will be held in Kerwin 2 at 7 p.m., with doors opening for the event at 6:45 p.m. Admission is free to students, staff and faculty with a valid AU ID.
