BREAKING: American University to end Saturday COVID-19 testing

University cites low testing numbers on weekends

American University announced changes to COVID-19 testing hours in an email from the Office of Campus Life Monday morning.

Starting in March, the AU testing center on East Campus will no longer offer Saturday hours and will only be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday to Friday. The University said in the email the shortened hours are due to the low number of community members testing on Saturdays.

The change comes nearly two months after a push from students to expand testing, including longer hours on weekdays and the addition of weekend hours.

The number of administered COVID-19 tests has steadily decreased over the past month, according to the University’s reporting dashboard. A random sample of 1,800 students are required to test each week as a part of AU’s increased surveillance testing, which went into effect on Feb. 7. Community members who tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 90 days are exempt from testing.

Members of the AU community who are unvaccinated will still be required to test weekly and testing is still also required for those who were identified as close contacts.
