BREAKING: MPD investigating armed theft outside New Mexico Ave. building

One suspect was armed

The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating “a theft involving a threat of force/violence” that took place Wednesday at 12 p.m. in front of the Ace Beverage Fine Wines and Spirits located at 3301 New Mexico Ave. NW, according to an email Assistant Vice President for University Police & Emergency Management Phil Morse sent to the University community.

The perpetrators appeared to be four males and one brandished a firearm. They fled in a black Chevy Impala with Maryland license plates, according to Morse.

Parts of the New Mexico Ave. NW building complex are owned by the University, and house stores and medical offices, along with the Office of Equity and Title IX and Office of Human Resources.

Any community member with information about the incident is encouraged to call AUPD’s emergency line at (202) 885-3636 or the Metropolitan Police Department at 911.

The robbery follows a Nov. 28 incident where a student was robbed at the AU shuttle stop in front of the Department of Homeland Security.

Morse encouraged students to use the RAVE Guardian Safety app and to be aware of their surroundings to stay safe.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
