Award-winning actor and mental health advocate Sean Astin will deliver the keynote address at American University’s 148th commencement on Dec. 15 in Bender Arena, according to an announcement sent to the University community on Dec. 2.
Astin, known for iconic roles in “The Goonies,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Stranger Things” and “Rudy,” will join the graduating class of 2024 in celebrating their achievements, marking a full-circle moment as he completes his master’s degree in public administration and policy at the University.
“Completing my degree at American University this year is the realization of a lifelong dream,” Astin said in the release. “At this moment in the history of our country, nothing is more important than affirming the value of the skill, talent, and dedication of our civil servants.”
In addition to his Hollywood career, which spans four decades, Astin has a robust history of civic engagement. He has served on boards for the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and played a key role during the union’s historic 118-day strike in 2023, achieving significant gains for media professionals.
Astin previously served as a civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army and a member of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.
“Sean Astin exemplifies what it means to be a lifelong learner and community-builder,” President Jonathan Alger said in the release. “As an Eagle himself, Sean will inspire our graduates with his journey and his continued quest to build change in our world.”
Astin’s commencement address will be part of two ceremonies recognizing approximately 1,475 graduates across the University’s schools. Biotechnology graduate student Oreoluwa Erinfolami, and political science and public relations major Ethan Cesar, will deliver remarks during the 9 a.m. ceremony for graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Communication and School of Public Affairs and Washington College of Law.
Elizabeth Peyton Upchurch, a graduate student in education policy and leadership, and School of International Service senior Mina Lili Kassim, will speak at the 1:30 p.m. ceremony for graduates of the Kogod School of Business, School of International Service, and School of Education and Professional Studies.
Astin will be awarded a doctor of humane letters during the ceremony, underscoring his contributions to public service and advocacy.
