When Lonnie Rivera, Delante Jones and James Washington signed their National Letters of Intent to play basketball at AU in 2014, there was a genuine buzz around the program. Jones and Washington were 3-star recruits, and Rivera had international basketball experience with the Puerto Rican national team.

I wasn’t going to write this column. I thought I had said everything I needed to say about my AU sports journey in my last column about my dad. That column flowed easily, my emotions and gratitude for my father and my family pouring out of my head like a rushing river. But, as I sat down to write a paper one night in the library with my swim teammates, I became overcome with another sensation of gratitude. And those feelings needed to be documented as well.

As bakers knead fresh dough behind transparent windows and cashiers serve bowls of fresh salads to eager customers, owner Mark Furstenberg chats with the regulars about their families. Locals flock to Bread Furst to pick up a loaf of fresh, crusty bread, a specialty cake for a celebration or even just a bowl of mixed market salads to enjoy on the patio during their lunch break.

Posters that “denigrate” and “target” women were posted in several buildings on campus late Tuesday night, the eve of International Women’s Day, AU police said. The posters referred to the commemorative day as “International Nag Day 2017,” and referenced women’s stereotypical homemaking roles, including a cartoon of a man saying “make me a sandwich.”

Remember when politicians were honest before the rise of Donald Trump’s alternative facts and fake news? Well, clearly you could use a media refresher, because lying didn’t start with Trump, according to Paul Krugman, who coined the term “post-truth” in 2011 while writing about the 2012 election. In his New York Times op-ed, Krugman points out the repeating of debunked info by notorious good-ol-boy Mitt Romney, when Mitt Romney called Obama a socialist.

The AU Board of Trustees voted Friday to increase tuition by 4 percent for fiscal years 2018 and 2019, which covers academic years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. The increase follows the trend of previous budgets, though the percentage increase is higher than the budget for fiscal years 2016 and 2017, which were 3 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively.

There is no doubt that apps like Tinder and Grindr have revolutionized the dating scene and easily allowed users to find who is single and ready to mingle. Though they were initially created for users to find sexual and romantic partners in their area, students at AU have found additional uses for these kinds of apps, such as finding new friends and boosting their confidence.

Two robberies occurred in the area surrounding campus on Friday night and early Saturday morning. These robberies mark the eighth and ninth crimes of the sort since mid-January, amid a recent rise in crime in the neighborhoods surrounding AU.
