We have lost our humanity. I’m not talking about the kind Jimmy Carter talked about in his televised speech in 1979. I’m talking about when we reach a point where we justify practices of sweatshop labor as something to be happy about and encourage more of them, as was stated recently in the Opinion section of “The Eagle” in a piece written by Bobby Zitzmann.

Standing in a sparse crowd of red “Make America Great Again” ballcaps was School of Public Affairs freshman Anthony Kuykendall, the AU College Democrats deputy chief of staff. He found himself sandwiched between Donald Trump supporters and a man holding up a makeshift Black Lives Matter sign, which drew the criticism of onlookers, who exchanged shouts and snide remarks.

Donald Trump is absolutely correct. There, I said it. His claims throughout the campaign trail and now in the days before his inauguration that political correctness has become a plague to public discourse could not be more true. But as I am supposed to be the voice of the progressives and since I intend to be that voice, and with any luck get insulted by Donald Trump after midnight on Twitter, I suppose I should elaborate on what I mean.

Scott O'Beirne, the library employee involved in an altercation with a student during a campus protest on Nov. 9, will retain his position at AU after being placed on administrative leave in November, according to an university spokeswoman.

On paper, AU’s on-campus nutrition is golden. AU dining services offer nourishing salads at Freshii, an assortment of vegetables in the Terrace Dining Room and rotating vegetable-centric dishes at Global Fresh. And yet, students don’t seem pleased.

Post-election attitudes have been loud, fear driven and have divided the country more than healed it. Conservatives are attempting to reach out to Clinton supporters across the nation, asking to “Give [Trump] a chance.”This optimism from the right is their attempt to normalize the rhetoric and fear mongering tactics that we were subjected to for a year and a half. Optimism can feed into normalization, and racism, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia and classism are not normal.
