Sexual harassment and assault prevention activist Anita Hill spoke to students on April 7 about her 1991 testimony against Supreme Court justice nominee Clarence Thomas in which she accused him of sexual harassment. The event came eight days prior to the release of “Confirmation,” HBO’s upcoming film documenting the trial, in which Hill is played by Kerry Washington.

The 2016 Student Government presidential candidates faced off publically for the first time last night in a presidential debate broadcasted by ATV. Following the debate, sophomores Will Mascaro, Devontae Torriente and Matt Mullin participated in a town hall in the Tavern where both of the debate’s moderators, junior Sarah Kravetz and freshman Kelly Conner, as well as students could ask questions directly to the candidates. Of all the questions asked, here are the four themes that stood out.

When a community-wide memo is sent out, American University students expect it to be honest and accurate, to provide us with the truth so that we can make informed and educated opinions. Unfortunately, that did not happen on March 10th, when Gail Hanson's memo, "Response to Media Reports of a Sexual Assault of an AU Student" failed to tell a complete and accurate story.

AU hosted a town hall on Monday night to discuss the proposed AU student Metro pass program, and the event was led by AU Executive Director of Risk, Safety and Transportation Daniel Nichols, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority directors Tracey Foster and Jawauna Greene, AU student and Deputy Director of Public Communications Kris Schneider and Metro Transit Police Deputy Chief Kevin Gaddis.

As an ever increasing number of millennials report having mental health issues, the most prevalent problem they seem to be facing is no longer depression, but anxiety, an issue that plagues AU, where 91 percent of students surveyed in 2013 reported feeling “
so stressed they couldn’t function.”

Christine Hamlett-Williams has been a subcontracted dining employee at AU for 34 years. Currently a cashier and a union shop steward, she sits most days behind the register at the mini P.O.D. Market in Mary Graydon Center. At 67, Hamlett-Williams wants to retire, but like other longtime dining employees, meager pension benefits over three decades have deprived her of this option.

Coming off a season that revealed many highs and lows, AU men’s basketball head coach Mike Brennan sat down in front of microphone on Oct. 29 to face questions from reporters during AU’s annual media day. Brennan and his team also allowed local media members into practice during the event, and players fielded questions about conference opponents, roster adjustments and leadership roles within the team.
