AU students may join youth panel

AU students have the opportunity to participate in a youth panel that will discuss the upcoming presidential election that will be filmed and shown on Al-Jazeera English. The panel will be part of the daily interview show "Riz Khan," and will feature six college-age people from around the country, consisting of two Democrats, two Republicans and two independents.

Although some college campuses around the country have begun to utilize advanced electronic tools to prevent and detect different forms of cheating, AU does not presently use advanced technology to help uncover potential cheaters. Pennsylvania State University is one of the colleges that has taken extra steps to ensure that students maintain academic honesty, setting up designated testing centers.

Former Sens. Bob Dole, R-Kan., and George McGovern, D-S.D., were awarded the World Food Prize Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa, for their work toward fighting child starvation worldwide. The two created the George McGovern-Robert Dole International Food for Education and Nutrition Program in 2000, according to the Associated Press.

The Virginia State Board of Elections passed legislation Tuesday to ban voters from wearing any campaign paraphernalia to polling places. The ban prevents people from wearing any campaign clothing, hats, buttons or other campaign material that supports or condones any candidate or party within 40 feet of polling entrances, according to The Washington Post.

Ads promote GBLT issue

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network and the Advertising Council recently joined together to create an advertising campaign that seeks to decrease anti-gay language, according to the campaign's Web site.

The plan has become more student-centric and underwent a board of trustees review during their Sept. 25-26 meeting, according to Student Trustee David Teslicko, who officially became a member of the board during the meeting.

Missing alumna released from Syria

Two American journalists, including an AU alumna, were released into U.S. custody last Thursday after being detained in a Syrian prison for crossing border from Lebanon aided by smugglers. Holli Chmela, 27, a 2003 AU graduate and former Eagle staffer, and Taylor Luck, 23, claimed they were "kidnapped" by a taxi driver in Lebanon.

Program encourages fitness

The Jacobs Fitness Center plans to host the Turkey Slim-down, a fitness contest throughout the pre-holiday season, in which AU students may participate to try to burn the most calories. The center's staff named the program, which it calls a "holiday calorie workout challenge.

SOC seeks reaccreditation

The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC) will assess the School of Communication this week to certify that the school will continue to meet the council's national standards. ACEJMC representatives will watch SOC classes and interview faculty members as part of the six-year renewal process according to SOC professor W. Joseph Campbell, who is involved in the accreditation.
