No guns for Public Safety

Since the Virginia Tech tragedy, students across the country have been thinking about ways to stay safe on college campuses. In response, many college administrations made student safety on campuses a top priority - schools installed extra swipe-card systems, legislation was written and enacted.

Correction for Feb. 23

In "Political clubs discuss health care, stimulus," The Eagle incorrectly identified Quinn Hurdle as a female. Hurdle is, in fact, a male. The Eagle regrets the error.

Letter to the editor: Student behavior disgusts fellow student

·

Tuesday night, I attended former Rep. Tom Tancredo's, R-Colo., speech on multiculturalism. Like many attendees, I strongly opposed his viewpoints and voiced my dissent, but I was willing to learn where he was coming from. Though I went as a protester, my goal was to listen respectfully, then challenge him on various points of his speech.

D.C. residents, as Americans, deserve representation

The column "D.C. voting needs creative solution" paints the issue of D.C. voting rights as a choice between statehood and retrocession, ignoring the fact that a bill currently before Congress is, in fact, constitutional. Statehood is a problematic option that would require a constitutional amendment.

Letter to the editor: GLC needs reform, increased attendance

Monday night, the Graduate Leadership Council hosted a grad student forum to hear grad student concerns. This was an event that we had been spammed about for weeks. It was billed as a good opportunity for grad student to hear concerns, share ideas, get answers and to help move the university forward.

Lee's D.C voting column misrepresents argument

While I agree with Jong Eun Lee in his Feb. 23 column "D.C. voting needs creative solution" that D.C. voting rights is a tricky issue, I do not believe he fully understands what the actual argument is about and what the consequences of retrocession would be.

UDC does tuition tango

Plans to increase tuition costs at the University of the District of Columbia from $3,800 to $7,000 have UDC students up in arms - and rightfully so. A nearly 100 percent increase in tuition is not acceptable at any institution of learning at any time. A nearly 100 percent increase in tuition at a public university dedicated to open access is ridiculous.

We need a store to represent the real AU

The Eagle recently reported that Housing and Dining has begun evaluating plans for the empty retail space in the tunnel, which has been vacant for the three-and-a-half years I've been at AU. Apparently the space's limited size and lack of an exhaust system make it a difficult sell to any potential food vendor.

Opinion

Supreme Court stands in D.C.'s way

Should D.C. have representation in Congress? A new bill working its way through committee would give D.C. a voting House member while adding another seat for Utah. Although D.C.'s lack of voting rights is profoundly undemocratic, we oppose this bill because it has the pesky problem of being unconstitutional.

Historic lessons loom over empire

Afghanistan: where empires go to die. Or so history would make us believe. First, it was the British - fresh from their conquest of India - that attempted to occupy the country in 1839. A short three years and some 20,000 casualties later, the Brits left to try again somewhere else.

Letter to the editor: Eagle coverage of staff- produced plays lacking

I was very disappointed that The Eagle failed to write a review for, or even cover, the Department Of Performing Arts' recent production of Noel Coward's "Hay Fever" in the Scene section of their publication. I understand that it is not possible for this paper to cover everything, but I feel that more effort could be made in terms of covering on-campus theater.

D.C. voting needs creative solution

After years of effort, it appears as if those who have long strived for D.C. voting rights might finally have their wish. The U.S. Senate has scheduled a preliminary vote on Feb. 24 on a measure to give D.C. full voting rights in the U.S. House of Representatives.

All students have the right to know

Students still living on-campus who were smart - or obsessive-compulsive - enough to read all the e-mails sent by the AU administration learned Saturday that a student has contracted the notoriously scary disease - tuberculosis. This unwelcome news was e-mailed along with a handy fact-sheet from the Centers for Disease and Control.

Age of innocence teaches us a lesson

Since she is on the brink of adolescence, and then adulthood where she will discover all the disappointments we blame on "growing up" - I want to say to my little sister: don't lose your young, hopeful, optimism. Before you become grossly self-involved and self-loathing like the rest of us, I want it in writing that once, when you were very young, you saw only the good in people.

Bloggers are putting me out of a job

I would like to thank the Academy. You know, for highlighting the growing irrelevance of award shows. I'm not saying my eyes won't be glued to the screen Sunday night; but I am saying that it's more likely that I, and many others, will be watching with a keen eye for snark.

Small change, big trouble

The march to turn college students back into children continues throughout the United States. We can die in Iraq, fight in Afghanistan and vote to elect the President of the United States - we cannot, however, control who sees our personal information and records.

Letter to the editor: AU students have lost that activist feeling

I am among the students who remember when Pura Vida first came to the Mary Graydon Center. I also remember the fight to bring it to campus over another Starbucks. Pura Vida embodied the AU student body and arguably the vision of our university. It not only espoused values of fair trade and fair wages in an increasingly neo-liberal world that favored cheaper labor in a race to the bottom.
