U.S. needs to rethink its racial classifiers

·

To the United States and for Americans, everything is a binary. If you're not male, you're female; if you're not a Democrat, you're a Republican; if you're not white, you're black. Anything that doesn't fit into the neat categories we create is of little value to us; just ask Ralph Nader.

Letter to the editor: College Dems are no good

·

It was with great joy that I read today's article about the AU Club Council funding allocations. As long as I can remember, the College Republicans and the College Democrats have received the same amount of funding, in an attempt to ostensibly promote fairness.

Correction for October 9, 2008

In "Students hang Obama effigy in Ore.," The Eagle incorrectly reported that George Fox University was a Catholic-affiliated institution. GFU is actually a Quaker university. The Eagle regrets the error.

Opening statements from College Republicans and College Democrats' debate

Below are the statements read at last night's debate between the College Republicans and College Democrats. The Eagle chose not to edit them for content or style and reproduced them on this page exactly as submitted. The views expressed are those of the respective organization and do not represent The Eagle's views.

Juicy Campus

Anyone who thought that college was supposed to be different than high school, or even middle school for that matter, was sorely mistaken. The recent popularity of the Web site Juicy Campus has proven that immaturity is endemic. The Web site, on which people can post anonymously about one another, has become an infested rat's nest of horrifyingly cruel and often completely untrue gossip.

Letter to the editor: Women's Issues column off mark on rape prevention

While I respect Ms. Lincoln's point in her recent editorial about condom availability on campus, I think she has missed several important issues. First, the article inaccurately confuses safer sex programs and rape prevention. The data is quite clear that, for preventing the spread of HIV and other STDs and in reducing unwanted pregnancy, condoms are very effective.

Credit crunch hits student loans

The recent downturn on Wall Street was bound to hit home sooner or later. As the credit crisis stretches on, the interest rates on student loans have begun to creep upwards. Student loan interest rates, which traditionally hover around 11 to 12 percent, are now around 13 to 14 percent.

Opinion

There are condoms all over the campus

And just what does AU offer to help keep students safe and confident? I do believe, for one, that there is a self-defense class. And there's the faded hotline numbers posted in the bathroom stalls: rape hotline, abuse hotline, counseling. And there are free condoms.

Opinion

Drop bad classes for better AU experience

As my time here at AU begins to come to a close, I've found myself wondering if I have any regrets - anything that I wish I had done. My initial reaction was to revert to the safe answer - how could I have regrets? For three years, I've managed to be active throughout this campus, from raising school spirit to volunteering my time helping others.

Letter to the editor: Republicans are no longer fiscally conservative

Apparently, in spite of how much we were told how "critical" and "important" it was that this bailout was passed "immediately," the U.S. Senate still found time to load up the bill with special projects and pork. Some of the goodies in this bill include an exemption from a 39-cent excise tax for children's wooden practice arrows, an extension of credits for businesses that employ residents of Indian reservations, millions for filmmakers, and wool research.

AU goes green

This week, The College Sustainability Report Card gave AU a respectable B- in its annual sustainability ratings for nationwide colleges and universities. This year's grade is a dramatic improvement over last year's grade of D-, which reflects hard work and improvement by students, administrators, faculty and staff alike.

Opinion

Students need to be careful

The Eagle recently editorialized on appearances that crime had increased on and around AU's campus. At that time, Public Safety attributed the increase in crime to more comprehensive Cleary Act-mandated crime reporting as opposed to an actual increase in crime.

Correction for September 29, 2008

In "Ivy League ROTC criticized," The Eagle incorrectly identified John Concepcion's school affiliation as being a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences. He is actually a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Public Affairs.

Opinion

Palin poses political problems for GOP

I've criticized Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama for the past 21 months for his inexperience, lack of vision and paper-thin record of accomplishment. I've also lambasted his heavy reliance on speeches and crowd sizes to make up for all of this.

Opinion

Obama needs to be more than a celebrity

If there is one word to summarize the message of Obama's campaign, it is probably "change." Obama has repeatedly proclaimed in this election that Americans have had enough with old style politics and it's time for change. It certainly is a good message; Americans like change and they are quite impressed by the meteoric rise of this charismatic, genuine candidate who seeks to bring innovation and optimism to U.

Opinion

China's economy poses U.S. problem

In 1933, Winston Churchill knew that Nazi Germany was on the rise and that the world would soon see its darkest days. But his colleagues considered him a fool. The very thought of another world war was ridiculous. After all, Germany was a peaceful nation and was economically dependent on the rest of Europe.

Holiday Inn Shuttle

Housing and Dining sent a series of e-mails this past summer to offer incentives for returning students to give up their on-campus housing as a way to better deal with the massive influx of admitted students. First, it offered gift cards sufficient to furnish an off-campus apartment and assistance in finding alternate housing.

Thumbs up...thumbs down

Thumbs up ...to Tina Fey. Her hilarious Sarah Palin impression gives at least one reason to watch "Saturday Night Live" again. The jury's still out on which one is actually hotter. ...to the Mets being eliminated from the playoffs. Those whiny, self-pitying dunces had it coming to them.

Opinion

Both VP picks leave much to be desired

Republican presidential nominee John McCain and Democratic nominee Barack Obama must both wish they could call a mulligan on their vice presidential selections right now. If Obama had convinced New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to join the ticket, his lead in the polls would probably now be approaching the size of the financial bailout.

The Eagle
Opinion

Smoking bans go too far

Fourteen of Pennsylvania's state universities' recent decision to ban smoking on campus is the continuation of a persistent problem. College administrations are increasingly taking the role of campus mother and enforcing unwanted regulation on students. In this case, the universities selectively interpreted a law on "clean air" to mean their whole campus.
