The media needs to be able to call 'pig' a pig

Volunteer to umpire a Little League game and be prepared for maniacal parents to obnoxiously question your eyesight. Join the national press corps and expect rabid charges of bias from all political wings. Lampooning the media is as natural - and as fair - as coaches working the ref; no one wants to lose because of a blown call.

To the AU Community: If you were one of the library users last week who had a laptop stolen, first let me extend a very personal apology to you and condolences for your loss. There are thieves among us. As your university librarian, I am utterly disappointed to write those words.

U.S. gov't should reinstate the draft

In the Declaration of Independence, it says "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." This declaration has been the mission of the United States, and it is one that we try to take optimistically and courageously.

Metrobus needs improvement

The Metrobus system is the most difficult mode of transportation to understand in D.C. Without the ease - and resultant expense - of taxis, or the reliability of Metrorail, Metrobus seems to go everywhere and nowhere all at once. Freshmen who make their way to a Metrobus stop for the first time are bound to spend at least a few minutes trying to decipher the hundreds of seemingly random times that make up the posted schedules.

Go to a McDonald's in New York and you may see something new. No, it's not some new burger. It's the result of a simple but powerful new law that makes the fast food industry retch and may make consumers retch even more: calorie information printed right on the menu board.

I am in no way a pacifist. I believe in military strength, covert operations and being able to fight when someone threatens our livelihood or that of our allies. Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama share that belief with me. But that is where our shared views on the military end.

Construction makes AU shine

AU students will surely welcome the opening of the new bridge to Mary Graydon Center and Butler Pavilion. Since the start of this school year, the bridge has been closed to foot traffic as construction crews crafted rounded steps to replace the simple "straight" steps from years past.

Why is there no male HPV vaccine?

Men have it easy. They generally get paid more than women for the same job. There's no need to forever hold on to their official divorce papers to prove that there was indeed a name change. No cramps, bloating, or tender body parts once a month. No daily birth control to keep track of.

Although Dan Bruey professes to care about student opinion, I and other members of the student government met privately with him at least three separate times last year to discuss changes at the Student Health Center. At least two of those times included discussions about the upcoming change in AU insurance provider.

Public Safety changes policy

With the last academic year passing relatively crime free, many students have been startled to find reports of sexual assault and robbery upon their return. Surprisingly, there has been no increase in crime-according to Public Safety Chief McNair; his department has simply become more diligent about alerting the campus community of safety concerns.

Textbook costs spin out of control

A student's problems with the bookstore are as much a part of the AU experience as TDR or late night political throwdowns. Still, this year these problems seem to leave even the most enthusiastic student exasperated as textbook sales continue to increase. Thankfully there seems to be some help on the way, (emphasis on some).

Treat AU as both your school and your home

When I walked through AU's gates three years ago, my new and unfamiliar home was sliding into chaos. Within weeks, I saw President Ben Ladner plummet amid allegations that involved French chefs and private chauffeurs. Students protested on the quad and demanded accountability, honesty and real leadership.

As a conservative, I was particularly disappointed with Michael Cartier's assessment of the Georgian conflict. The invasion of Russian troops into Georgian territory was not any sort of "retaliation." For nearly 20 years, Russia has attempted to destabilize any former Soviet republic that has broken away towards democracy.

Agressive foreign policy can be moral

There is perhaps no political ideology that is more widely discussed and less understood than neo-conservatism. Although aspects of it have captured the imagination of high-ranking officials in the Bush administration in the post-9/11 era and have shaped its foreign policy in unprecedented ways, it continues to be employed as a smear and more often, to the less activist-minded, an utter question mark.

Transgender care lacking

In 2006, staff members of AU issued a proposal calling for the coverage of transgender care by the university's health care program. The proposal has yet to produce results and staff insurance still does not cover transgender care. Neither does the student health insurance.

Off-campus drinking may well have just become far more costly for those underage students who choose to imbibe. Citing the desire to maintain and improve safety within the community, Public Safety Chief Michael McNair recently disclosed a new initiative aimed at improving communication and cooperation between Public Safety and police departments in Maryland and D.

The start of convention season also signifies the beginning of the final campaign stretch. Both Barack Obama and John McCain will now aggressively attempt to differentiate one from another. Each will now try to emphasize that he is a more qualified leader for this nation and will attempt to communicate what sort of "change" is right for America.

There is little doubt that a new Cold War would be devastating for people around the world, yet it seems that the United States is pushing the world closer to the brink of another Cold War relations. South Ossetia is a semi-autonomous area of Georgia with about 70,000 people, located in central Asia.

Dear readers, Since I took over as editor in chief in late April, and through the summer break, I have been working with my staff to plan The Eagle's direction for the coming academic year. While you may have already noticed some of our new features, I want to summarize what I hope our newspaper can accomplish this year.



Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
