Capitol blues: When the FBI fails to pay its phone bill

·

Every morning, I sit down and slowly wake myself up with a cup of bad coffee and The Washington Post. When I flipped through the paper on Jan. 11, I almost spat my coffee across the funnies. It seems that those pesky wiretaps, placed on American citizens by executive decree, are being turned off because the FBI forgot to pay its phone bill.

Letter to the editor

While I am ecstatic about the coverage and accompanying editorial about the importance of the Women's Resource Center, I want to give credit where credit is due. In Mr. Brusoe's editorial, he mentions that Women's Initiative administers the RAD classes. While we do help with publicity for the sessions, they are administered by Public Safety.

Staff editorial: Some much needed election buzz

Even for those of us who are not Democrats, the news that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is speaking at AU came as a pleasant shock. And considering how quickly the news spread across campus, it's safe to say that the rest of AU's student body was equally as ecstatic.

Opinion

In my humble opinion: End the transfer credit double standard

What are you doing this summer? Like many students, you may decide to take a summer course to broaden your horizons, knock off a few prerequisites for an AU course or just up credits that you need to graduate on time. Many college students will choose to take these courses back home and save some money by commuting and paying less per credit hour.

Common sense: America: Still the world's hegemon

Have some faith. I'm not talking about the religious kind - that's all well and good. I'm talking about personal faith in this country. This past weekend, The New York Times Magazine published a gigantic article about the United States' slipping global position, pointing to the emergence of China and the European Union as global economic players and policy shapers.

Staff editorial: AU Abroad under investigation

We have nothing but unanswered questions following New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's subpoena of the AU Abroad office. Sadly, the allegations aren't very specific. All Cuomo's office told The New York Times was that a variety of study abroad programs may have accepted kickbacks in the form of rebates, free or subsidized travel, help with office or marketing services and seats on administrative boards.

"In our own words" is the newest addition to the editorial page. Unlike our other content, it is a biweekly opinion column written by The Eagle's editorial staff. The column tackles no one particular issue - it is not inherently political, nor does it concern only campus matters.

Really? Pirate-themed sex advice? Are we 14? I do not think I am alone in saying that Pierce Hardcastle will be sorely missed. AU students deserve a humorous, though informed, sex column - one that can live up to the standard the former columnist set. Everyone who is having sex in the dorms already knows they should warn their roommate(s).

Correction for Jan. 17, 2008

In the two photos accompanying "Pants-less jokesters take passengers for ride," the photos were incorrectly credited to Dave Stone. Both pictures were taken by Adam Dexter. In the photo accompanying "Dorm Recipe: Outrageous orzo peppers anyone's palate," there was no credit.

In my humble opinion: Time for a gender resource center

One of the great narratives in American culture is our quest to ensure that the "blessings of liberty" are given to all Americans, regardless of money, race, national origin, religious preference, sexual orientation or gender. Sadly, the most pervasive areas in which our society fails us is when it comes to promoting the equality of the genders.

Opinion

In our own words: Beware of election opinion polls

"Obama bolts ahead of Clinton in new poll," read a New York Times headline two days before the seminal New Hampshire primary that "reaffirmed" the New York senator's status as front-runner. "Fading in polls, Clinton vows to fight on," was The Washington Post's optimistic approach to the story.

Staff editorial: An unfair mandate?

When Mayor Adrian Fenty last semester issued a controversial order mandating taxicab drivers to switch from a zone-based system to a time-and-distance meter, we accepted his decision with reasonable qualifications. As we outlined in a previous staff editorial, the new meter system provides much needed relief for our wallets, but the means by which the mayor procured that change were incredibly unfair to the cab drivers.

Staff editorial: Digging for some real answers

Despite the frequent setbacks last semester, it is by no means surprising that yet another roadblock stands in the way of the Army Corps of Engineers' controversial Pit 3 dig: a shell containing arsine gas and "energetics," which are explosives containing TNT.

Thumbs up...thumbs down

Thumbs Up to... Sporadic 70-degree weather... Unseasonably warm days are nice breaks from freezing, occasionally snowy morning treks to class. Free Metro rides... WMATA should make mistakes more often. Class squatting... It might be wrong, but it's the only way some of us get to take the classes we want.

What a travesty: Fenty's first year a mixed success

This month marks one year since Mayor Adrian Fenty took office. Let's review the first year with this young, ambitious politician at the helm of our city. As a D.C. councilmember representing Ward 4, Fenty gained a reputation as a can-do leader who focused on the needs of the less fortunate members of the District.

Staff editorial: Beating AU bureaucracy

We can certainly all agree that AU has its bureaucratic moments, but does hiring a consultant to identify the problems we've long lamented about do anything substantial for the university? That answer very well depends on what you think the problem is. On one hand, navigating the processes of the Financial Aid, Registrar and Student Accounts offices is a grueling, degree-worthy endeavor - and reaching each by telephone is even more demanding.

Life in the district: Surviving awkward semester breaks

With this year's spring break likely to be spent frantically searching for jobs or an excuse to stay in school for another few years, this winter break marked the final time many AU seniors visited home before plunging into the "real world." However, ever since the first Thanksgiving break freshman year, when we raved about how fantastic our new college lives were, it seems like each subsequent visit home has been progressively more bittersweet.

Corrections

Correction for Nov. 29, 2007 In "'Red' campaign falls short in AIDS fight," the RED campaign was incorrectly identified as a charity. In actuality, it is a business model. Also, RED does not spend money on its advertisements; instead, its business partners handle advertisers.

Letter to the editor: Misleading quotation in Justice Not Jails article

I would like to clarify a statement of mine that was misquoted. Regarding the correlation between educational attainment and crime, I was quoted as saying, "The less educated you are, the more likely you are to commit a crime." In reality, increased education opens up economic and social opportunities that can decrease an individual's perceived need to commit crime, but in no way is educational attainment the deciding factor in probability of offending.

Letter to the editor: Product(RED) Supports AIDS Prevention

The idea that normal people can't make a difference to an epidemic as massive as AIDS in Africa couldn't be further from the truth. Product (RED) is making a very big difference in the lives of women and children living with AIDS in Africa. In the last 20 months, (RED) has generated $51.
