Terror: The Modern-Day Environmental Movement

·

Once upon a time, the environment was important, but left mostly to the elites who understood it. Scientists and other well-read professionals concerned themselves with environmental problems and advised governments on the relevant issues. This was known as the era of conservationism.

Staff editorial; Editorial Board Endorses SG Executive Candidates

President: Joe Vidulich Unlike the endorsements for the other positions, the endorsement for president was not necessarily an easy one to make. Voters are presented with three options: one mostly joke candidate, a write-in candidate who means well but doesn't come close to having enough experience and someone deeply entrenched in the SG.

Primary Politics, Continued

·

Last week a reader criticized my recent prognostication on the developing presidential race for two supposed errors. My "biggest problem" was overselling Barack Obama; my "greatest mistake" was underselling the Republican field. I suggested that Obama was best positioned to capture his party's nomination because of the appeal of his inspiring message.

Corrections and Clarifications from March 1

In an article titled "SG waives exec credit requirements," it was incorrectly stated that some members of the Undergraduate Senate favored waiving the 45-credit SG executive candidacy limit for freshman David Manzanares so the SG secretary race would not be uncontested.

Death, Be Not Proud

Abortion has been legal in the United States since Roe v. Wade made it so in 1973. However, the way the pro-choice movement paints things, we're always just a step away from back-alley abortions with coat hangers if those Bible-thumping fundamentalists have their way and overturn Roe v.

Staff editorial: Election waivers underscore limited candidate pool

After two separate votes, the Undergraduate Senate decided late Monday night to waive requirements set forth in SG bylaws and allow two students to run for SG executive positions. Freshman Alex Manzanares will be allowed to run for secretary even though he hasn't completed the required 45 credits.

Bureaucracy, false incentives: Why welfare is broken

As a libertarian, I am philosophically opposed to government transfers of wealth. Period. As a concerned citizen, though, I am more comfortable with transfers of wealth that accomplish their aims of increased equality and living standards for the poor than I am with those that don't.

A Little Less Conversation, A Little More Action

Now I know a little bit about how John Kerry might feel. The near victor in 2004, swift-boated and flip-flopped out of the few thousand votes necessary to win the presidency, seemed almost resurgent and among one of the leading contenders for 2008 until "the joke.

Staff editorial: Diversity panel offers constructive approach

In response to controversial recent postings on the Daily Jolt and Facebook, several primarily black fraternities organized a "University Diversity" panel to discuss race relations on campus. Some of the 150 people in attendance came in response to a posting on The Daily Jolt by Jolt editor and Eagle editorial columnist Paul Perry.

Staff editorial: No matter what, at least we can watch YouTube

Brigham Young University in Utah has blocked YouTube.com from its server. The Mormon school blocks all Web sites it deems to contain "pornography, adult content and violence" in order to "provide a safer environment when browsing the Internet by preventing access to inappropriate Web sites.

Saving Social Security

For over a year now, a theory on how to save Social Security has been bouncing around in my head. The straight-forwardness of my plan is grounded in pragmatism, yet it is strangely absent from most of the dialogue in and outside of the Beltway. I propose to gradually increase the age at which people receive benefits.

Letter to the editor

I have never before felt embarrassed by my fellow American University students before reading the article on student-opinion of the new low-flow showerheads in the residence halls ("Showerheads prompt focus on student feedback," Feb. 22). But now, I can honestly say that I am ashamed to classify myself among them.

Free Trade: Under Attack

It is official. Free trade is under attack, and I can hear the cheers all around Washington, from the classrooms of AU to the halls of Congress. I find this quite ironic for two reasons. First, this university prides itself in calling on its students to find solutions to the world's problems.

Correction

In the Feb. 22 issue of The Eagle, a photo caption incorrectly stated that Leonard Slatkin was the maestro of the American University Symphony Orchestra. Slatkin is actually the music director of the National Symphony Orchestra, and was visiting AU as this semester's Katzen Community Lecturer, where he guest-conducted a rehearsal of the AU Symphony Orchestra.

Staff editorial: Showerhead changes steam up AU without warning

Even if living in the dorms were the greatest experience in the world, students could at least count on a nice hot shower. Until now. Staff from Facilities Management has been coming into dorm bathrooms and replacing the old showerheads with newer, more water-saving models.

Staff editorial: Support diversity in the SG - run for office!

In response to poor turnout at mandatory pre-election meetings, the Board of Elections has added additional meeting times and pushed back the date of Student Government elections. The elections for executives and class and school councils will take place March 5 and 6 instead of March 1 and 2 as was originally planned.

Defending my Party Against the Left

I am a Democrat. I believe in the ideals of the Democratic Party and hope to see a Democrat in the White House in 2009. However, lately I have become disturbed not by the opposition from the right but rather by the obstruction from the left that threatens my hope.

Working with Wikipedia Thanks for the Feb. 19 article on Wikipedia, which was the subject of some discussion (pro and con) at the annual faculty Teaching Conference last month. I encourage my students to use Wikipedia as an initial reference source, and don't mind them citing it in papers and presentations as long as they use other more traditional sources as well.

Perfunctory Primary Pondering

Political columnists regularly find two temptations irresistible: D.C. silliness being one and relentless horse race "analysis" being the other. These are frequently substitutes for substance. This week, in the spirit of the David Broders and Maureen Dowds of the world, I will succumb to both temptations in the same column.
