America is back

·

While governing may be a delicate art of negotiation and compromise, the elections that invariably must come before are a set of cold, zero-sum contests with clear winners and losers. An abridged scorecard from last Tuesday: Winner: The regular folk. Americans working minimum wage jobs, students paying college tuition, seniors struggling with prescription payments - all of these now have an advocate in the legislative branch.

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor: In response to two previous letters (11/2/06 and 11/6/06), I appreciate the concerns voiced for better mental health services as well as the efforts to clarify misperceptions. However, I have misgivings about other aspects of each letter. I find it troubling - if not groundless - to characterize the Counseling Center ("CC") as a place "where the therapists are inexperienced graduate students.

Correction from Nov. 6

In a photo on the front page, field hockey player Camila Infante was incorrectly identified as her teammate Irene Schickhardt. It was also incorrectly stated that Holy Cross was ranked No. 19 at the time of their loss to AU, but in reality it was AU that was ranked 19th.

Staff editorial: AU sex health awareness OK, but could use a boost

A recently released survey by Trojan graded sexual education at colleges nationwide. Although AU was not selected (Georgetown and George Washington were D.C.'s two representatives in the survey), there is debate about how AU would rate. The survey based its ratings on several criteria, including the availability of condoms, contraception and testing for HIV and other diseases and the existence of a sex health Web site and sex advice column.

Staff editorial: Election Day at AU: Christmas in November

At the nation's most politically active campus, Election Day is like Christmas. The College Republicans and College Democrats held parties. Smaller gatherings of friends were glued to CNN, MSNBC and Fox News as each person followed their home races. Network coverage of this year's election was fun to watch.

Now there's work to do

Tuesday night was a resounding rebuke for the Bush administration, the former Republican majority in Congress and their disastrous policies at home and abroad. Democrats should remember, though, that their victory was both a delicate and negative one. They did not dazzle the American people with an array of programs and initiatives (and frankly they never do) to the point that it caused this overwhelming shift in power.

Political poison

No president is ever universally liked. Both Lincoln and FDR were accused by their opponents of being tyrannical for expanding the power of the federal government. Lincoln was also called such names as "ape" and "baboon." There will always be segments of the population that direct venomous hatred toward their opponents.

Letters to the editor

Office of Campus Life responds to Counseling Center criticism Dear Editor: I am writing to correct some misperceptions expressed in "Lack of campus psychiatric services" ("Letters to the Editor," The Eagle, November 2, 2006). The Student Health Center did experience a change in staffing for psychiatric services recently.

Election predictions: Dems to take House

Only a day before the fall election, I look optimistically toward the result. It is hard to believe that the tide of politics has changed so much from two years ago. When 2005 began, the Republicans were in control of the White House, Congress and a majority of gubernatorial offices.

Staff editorial: Democrats: Be careful with potential new powers

A recent poll by the Harvard Institute of Politics shows that 32 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds intend to vote in tomorrow's election. If this holds true at the polls tomorrow, it will be the highest youth turnout in 20 years. The poll also shows that the majority of youth favor a Democrat-controlled Congress and that, overall, the president is doing a completely average job.

Warning: Voters on election day are unpredictable

The election is tomorrow, and, to be perfectly honest, I am glad that campaign season is coming to an end. I've had enough with the mudslinging, the misleading commercials and the non-stop news coverage. The million-dollar question, of course, is who will control Congress after this election, and by what margin? After much analysis (and a few throws at a dartboard), I can conclude that the Democrats will seize control of the House while failing to regain control of the Senate.

OP-ED

The stakes are high, the nation is wounded and a change is desperately needed. Here we go again. Personally, I think the Democrats will retake the House, with the Senate too close to call. Up until a few days ago, I thought the Republicans would hold their majority in the Senate by about a seat or two, but now I think the Democrats may gain six seats (Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Montana, Missouri, Ohio and Virginia) and take control.

Staff editorial: Park Service: Here's what to do with the Mall

The National Park Service is considering plans to overhaul the National Mall. The project will be looked at from a visitor's view and will focus mostly on renovating facilities that have taken a beating from the more than 25 million visitors who go to the Mall every year.

In an Oct. 30 article titled "WCL grant enables human rights work abroad," the students who will participate in the program were not named. The students are LL.M candidate Elisa Reyes and JD candidate Ernesto Gonzalez. The Eagle apologizes for this omission.

TOM NOBLE Thank God George W. Bush won the 2004 presidential election! Do not mistake me for either a social conservative or a die-hard Republican. I'm a liberal Democrat. I liked John Kerry as much as the next Democrat voter, which is to say I absolutely loathe George W.

Staff editorial: Penny fundraiser should

The penny drive, run through the Friends of the AU Library, that began Oct. 1 is off to a slow start. It has raised $29.42 of the $10,560 goal for the end of the semester. The campaign might be hampered by a lack of publicity, as some students say they haven't even heard of it.

Staff editorial: Failure to meet textbook deadline hurts students

The Student Government has launched a publicity campaign to encourage professors to get their textbook adoptions in on time. The deadline was Oct. 15. Only 20 percent of professors had their adoptions in on time. When this happens, students get 10 percent of the original value for their books instead of the 50 to 60 percent they could get if the bookstore was assured that professors would use those textbooks again.
