National discontent will lead to ultimate Democratic victory

·

"I have earned a political capital, and I intend to spend it," said a confident President Bush in his second inauguration speech. The Republicans seemd to have again nailed down a victory as 2005 began. While the Republicans eagerly looked forward to another conservative revolution, a heavy wave of discontent swept the ranks of the Democratic Party.

Incoming SG execs have big shoes to fill

Kyle Taylor, President From the moment at orientation when he invited incoming freshmen to become his Facebook friends, SG President Kyle Taylor has been an accessible, competent leader. Taylor was faced with the unforeseen challenge of the Ben Ladner embezzlement charges and subsequent resignation.

Megan Slack, left, will take over as editorial editor while Marissa Newhall, former managing editor for The Scene, will rise to EIC.

New year means new Eagle EIC

OUTGOING: MEGAN SLACK To say that I've learned a great deal from my term as editor in chief would truly be an understatement. I've learned so much about journalism, about working with other student leaders, about late nights in the Eagle's Nest and more about the AU board of trustees than I could have ever imagined I would.

Outgoing SG leaders tackled Ladner, school spirit with resolve

Genevieve Frye, KPU Director For those of us who were around for Michael Gorbechev and the infamous, "If you could be any animal..." question, KPU would have to bring in some seriously big names to seem really impressive. No doubt, this year brought some great speakers: Wesley Clark, Bob Dole and Madeleine Albright, to name a few.

To call Mr. Dunbar's recent article a ridiculous distortion would be a compliment much more worthy than it deserves. His rant against the "radical right-wing conservatives" is a gross misrepresentation of the views of those that he attacks. I will attempt to show the flawed reasoning and outright deception that takes place throughout this article, although to do so thoroughly would require an article of Biblical (yes, pun intended) proportions.

New Nebraska dorms to offer privacy, amenities

ÿ The new housing that will open in Nebraska Hall seems like a dream come true. It will feature suites with single bedrooms and all sorts of amenities that regular rooms don't have - incluing double beds and breakfast bars. It should be a nice transition between traditional dorms and living on your own.

Honor the military men and women among us

Diversity at AU is discussed in terms of gender, race, sexual orientaion, political affiliation and more, but often overlooked is the diversity of experience in students' backgrounds. Among Hill interns, international students, students who with full time jobs, we share our classes and TDR table with students who have served in the military.

Taylor should stand with students on meals

I have never been one to shy away from criticizing the Student Government, so I think that it is only fair that I not shy away from complimenting them when they have finally done something worthwhile for students. I am speaking about the Meal Plan Accountability Act, which the Undergraduate Senate passed last Sunday to educate students about the high cost of their meal swipes compared to paying cash at TDR and the Tavern and about sophomores being required to purchase meal plans.

Remember Armenian genocide

I am not supposed to be here. If the plan had gone accordingly, millions, along with my grandparents, would have died and an entire race would have vanished. The perpetrators did not fulfill this goal, but they were responsible for committing the first genocide of the 20th Century.

All thumbs

Thumbs up... Number 1... Freshmen Day fun. Nothing says spring like 2,000 prospective students, parents in tow, swarming campus. This year's event was one of the biggest ever, despite the dismal weather. Number 2... Madeline Albright. Gotta love this throw back to the Clinton era.

Staff editorial: Muslim sorority blends cultures, lacks members

ÿ Although the first chapter has yet to be chartered on a college campus, a newly conceived sorority is helping make an unlikely connection between Muslim and Western cultures. Two women, a mother and daughter who both have converted to Islam, started the sorority Gamma Gamma Chi last year.

Let's conduct a thought experiment: let's imagine that radical right-wing conservatives actually got their way, and every one of their proposals immediately became law. What would America look like? First we have to acknowledge that even the notoriously-lockstep evangelical and conservative Catholic movement is not a monolith.

Not even Zacharias Moussaoui deserves death penalty

I am utterly disgusted by the fact that I live in a country that still sees fit to practice capital punishment. I firmly believe that the death penalty is just one of those things that, given the moral clarity of hindsight, when its abolition becomes a reality years from now, we will look back on this barbaric practice and say to ourselves, "What were we thinking?" The same has proven true for such travesties of American history as the denial of women's suffrage, slavery, and the Japanese internment during World War II.

Staff editorial: Annual day of silence ends with a quiet scream

GLBT students ended their annual day of silence with a group scream on the quad. After not speaking for an entire day, a silence symbolizing marginalized GLBT people, the scream was not only an outlet for pent-up speech, but also pent-up anger. Many students agree that AU is generally a GLBT-friendly campus and issue awareness is strong.

In response to feedback regarding the April 17 issue of The Eagle, content from a subscription news service was used because the issue's publication deadline conflicted with the Easter holiday. The choice to use wire content does not signal a change in The Eagle's use of original, student-written content in future issues.

Enforcing immigration laws is necessary; not racist or unkind

The current immigration debate has succeeded in providing, to quote President Bush, a "comprehensive" look at its legal, cultural, and economic aspects. The problem is most of the solutions proposed are political, with Democrats doing everything to paint Conservatives as racist and some Republicans more concerned about the Hispanic vote than law enforcement.

Thumbs up A/C in the dorms... Just in time for warm weather. You can use your mail key if your RA hasn't turned yours on yet. 8 more class days... Where did the semester go? Good luck on finishing work before finals. Thumbs down ReNu eye fungus... Stop using ReNu's eyedrops! If untreated this fungus could lead to blindness.

U.S. should seek fair, practical solution on immigration

Fear and anger are effective political tools. I was sorry to see the GOP use these weapons to stir the American people, urging a crackdown on illegal immigrants. Concentrating solely on border control and ignoring the plight of the hard working illegal immigrants and the better interest of the US economy, the GOP-controlled House passed in December a law to treat illegal immigrants as felons and punish even those who help them.

Staff editorial: Student volunteers pitch in to spruce up campus

Kudos to the four hundred plus volunteers who mulched, planted and labored as part of this year's Campus Beautification Day. The barbecue and free stuff, including "Be Beautiful" shirts and giveaways from Nextel, certainly helped draw volunteers, but the early start time limited participation.

Staff editorial: Palenstinian awareness week successful; rare

Last week the Students for Justice in Palestine hosted an awareness week on the quad, pitching an eye-catching white tent and hosting exhibits to raise Palentinian cultural and political awareness among AU students. The annual event raises awareness on issues affecting Palestinians in the ongoing problems with Israel.
