The FDA: killer or savior?

·

If you've been reading the news lately, you may have come across some talk of the Food and Drug Administration's latest approval. Vectibix is a drug used to treat colorectal cancer, the third leading cause of death in the United States. The drug has been shown to slow tumor growth and, in some cases, reduce the size of tumors.

Staff editorial: Put your pennies where your mouth is

The AU library is consistently ranked one of the worst in the nation (it earned a spot at number 16 on Princeton Review's "This is a Library?" ranking last year), and someone is finally trying to do something about it. The Friends of the American University Library is sponsoring the "Change Your Library: A Mile of Pennies" campaign.

SOA brothers same as other frats Hello, I just wanted to comment on all that has been going on with the two "hazardous" fraternities SOA and EI. I know many members of SOA personally, and if it means anything, I think that the public should know that they are not some creepy gang members but rather really great guys.

Staff editorial: UNH students want

A group of students at the University of New Hampshire is circulating a petition calling for the removal of a psychology professor who told his students that he is a member of the group Scholars for 9/11 Truth, a group that believes the federal government had prior knowledge of the Sept.

Corrections from Sept. 28

In an article titled "IFC wants two fraternities out," it was stated that Epsilon Iota "does not follow any sort of bylaws." An elected officer of EI told The Eagle that EI does in fact follow a set of by-laws. In an article about the Rude Mechanicals, Katie Molski's name was misspelled.

Celebrities aren't the only ones who should check their opinions at the door In his column "Attention celebrities: Please, shut up!" (The Eagle, 9/25/06), Caleb Enerson writes a diatribe against celebrities voicing their opinions on political and current events.

Staff editorial: BoT takes much-needed, yet cryptic, Darfur action

Last week, the board of trustees took an important step and adopted a formal policy that AU will divest from companies that do business in the Sudan. Specifically, the university will remove investments from companies that do business in Sudan's oil and gas business by the end of the year and will report back to the university community.

Traditions of liberalism are alive in annals of U.S. history

As a student of American history and a staunch liberal, I have often been distressed at the antipathy held toward this country by many of my ideological brethren. This distrust of and anger toward the United States is hardly new among the left wing; indeed, to a certain degree it is quite healthy, as only through criticism can the integrity of any institution vested with human authority be preserved.

When the saints come marching in

First things first, the people of New Orleans deserve a little something to celebrate. Given their rich history of Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras and The Big Easy, this otherwise festive city has now been licking its wounds from Hurricane Katrina for the past year.

Staff editorial: From "don't ask, don't tell" to "don't even show up"

Two students, one an AU grad student and the other a student at the University of Maryland, performed a heroic act on Tuesday. The women, both open lesbians, attempted to enlist in the military in direct conflict with the armed forces' "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which has been in effect since 1993.

Corrections

In a Sept. 25 article titled "Women's Initiative reaches out to men," it was incorrectly stated that the Breastival will take place on Oct. 7. It will actually take place on Oct. 5. It was also incorrectly reported that the College Republicans are sponsors of the Breastival, but in reality their sponsorship has not been officially decided.

AU suicide policy better than at other schools

Federal courts have recently ruled that a college has a duty to intervene when one of its students' lives is in danger. These rulings came in response to lawsuits from students and parents, most notably in the case of a George Washington University student who was evicted from the dorms and barred from campus after he checked himself into the hospital after having suicidal thoughts.

I would first like to thank Steven Smallpage for his thoughtful criticism of my first column. I would also like to address his concerns, because it seems as though he has mistaken Libertarianism with Anarchism. On his first point, that the state arose to protect our rights and that in the state of nature those rights are not protected, I am in complete agreement.

Parties blinded by orthodoxy in primaries

Primaries are usually mere political formalities, particularly if the incumbent is running for re-election. This year, however, there were two very intense primaries in the U.S. Senate races. One was a Republican primary and the other was a Democratic primary.

Reaction to party bust threatens everyone's safety

Last Tuesday, DRs in Anderson-Centennial caught students trying to sneak a keg of beer into the residence halls. Later, as Housing and Dining staff and Public Safety were attempting to document students who were attending a party in Centennial (for which the first keg was intended), a fire alarm was pulled on another floor.

Attention celebrities: Please, shut up!

In the movie "Team America," Janeane Garofalo's character remarks, "Our job as actors is to read the newspapers, and repeat what we've read on TV, like it is our own opinion." What was obviously meant as a comedic statement is, sadly, becoming less satirical and more serious in today's society.

New blue lights increase safety, decrease privacy

Installation of new blue lights on campus should be completed by the end of next month. The 25 new lights have one important safety feature: two-way calling. The old blue lights only let the person calling talk to Public Safety, and Public Safety couldn't respond.

Would new smoking policies be enforceable?

In one of the last acts of the current legislative term, the Undergraduate Senate is focusing on how to reform the university's smoking policy. The current policy prohibits smoking in dorms and academic buildings, including in entranceways and on stairs. All members of the university community are supposed to enforce the policy.

...Political utopia: Voting for issues, not parties

I was reading an article in The Washington Post yesterday about Maryland's Republican candidate for Senator, Michael Steele. The title was, "Where's The Party? Nowhere To Be Found in Steele's Ads." The article, written by Paul Farhi, focuses on Steele's campaign ads and their lack of party identification.
