Student senate needs to go

·

I know that this will come as a shock to anyone who has ever glanced at my column, but I do not like the Student Government. I think that it is a holding pen for the self-important who used to run their high schools and now want to convince themselves that they are that much closer to their destined seat in Congress and thus that much closer to saving the world.

Staff editorial: AU must clarify its disaster response plan

Since AU is in the nation's capital, and America remains a target of terrorists worldwide, it is not surprising to hear that businesses and schools in the area have plans if another attack should happen. We just aren't so sure what our school's plan is. Homeland Security's main compound sits across Ward Circle, and apparently they are ready to respond should something happen and people need to be evacuated.

Staff editorial: AU should divest itself from Darfur

The rampant genocide that has been occuring in the Darfur region of Sudan has garnered international attention. However, what it has not garnered thus far is large scale divestment from the country. We feel that AU should have nothing to do with profitting ffrom a country that savagely and nonchalantly allows the slaughter of millions of its people.

'Wrong' is Will Haun's new middle name

American University will cause any logical person with the slightest concept of political ideas to become steaming mad at one idea or another. The outlets for such emotion generally consist of uselessly irrational political banter. Having felt such pressures before, I want to thank Will Haun for writing an article so asinine that I actually chuckled and became happy rather than angry.

Staff editorial: E-textbooks: a new take on the original

The campus bookstore has begun offering e-textbooks, which allow you to read course materials on your computer. While it may be convenient and sometimes cheaper, e-textbooks would require you to print out pages if you want to take them with you, and this makes highlighting and marking tedious.

All thumbs

Thumbs up... Jeff Lambert, Mr. American... The Eagle's own "rap-tized" the audience and the judges. Way to go, Jeff! Craigslist Belle and Sebastian Tix... Sold out shows mean frustrated fans. Fortunately, CL is there to save the day ... but for a pretty penny.

Staff editorial: S. Dakota abortion law start of showdown

Last week, South Dakota's legislature passed a ban on abortion, except in the case of the life of the mother. There are no exceptions for rape or incest, and doctors face up to five years in prison for performing an abortion. Newspapers have also chronicled how the abortion dividing lines are being drawn increasingly according to the Red State/Blue State electoral map.

Staff editorial: How truthful is your resume?

A new online service, fakeresumes.com, is offering students help in getting the jobs they deserve by fluffing up resumes with nice but completely false information. The cost of all this? Around $100 for a "tune up." We are disheartened to learn that according to a study, 53 percent of Americans embellish their resumes, and 70 percent of college students do.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor: Over the past three weeks or so I have noticed a startling omission from your otherwise fine publication. There once was a time when every Thursday, I would open my copy of?The Eagle, eyes aglow with anticipation, and read the police blotter, marvelling at the heroic deeds of our brave Public Safety officers and laughing at the occasional humorous incident.

Cartoons: all sides suffer from ignorance

As a student planning to travel to Copenhagen next fall, I read the articles regarding the Danish cartoon reactions around the world with great curiosity. These types of outbursts and rioting are something I have never heard of or seen before. It reminds of the stories I've heard regarding the images that came back from Vietnam.

U.S. must 'trust its ability to protect national security'

To quote Sean Hannity, "In foreign policy poker, the United States plays with its cards face up." This has become a melancholy truth in light of the endless supply of intelligence leaks that spur debates about civil liberties instead of the national security that provides civil liberties.

Staff editorial: WVAU: give it a listen and some funding

American University's student radio station does not live up to station billing. We can't blame them since they have been undercut by the institution it is here to serve. Only available through an Internet stream and iTunes, a call sign would be a welcome change-the audience would increase and hosts could actually feel like they're reaching people.

Staff editorial: TDR serves up big helpings of violation

AU's main dining facilities on the main and Tenley campuses have failed health inspections recently. During an inspection on March 21, 2005, TDR was cited for having dirty food storage areas and for not protecting food products and ingredients. Since 2001, TDR has had 31 violations, 22 of which were "critical," the most serious type of violation.

U.S. should abolish capital punishment

On his first full day on the Supreme Court, Justice Samuel Alito caused a stir among his conservative supporters by voting to stay the pending execution of Missourian Michael Taylor. While Alito's vote in favor of the stay might have been a move orchestrated to demonstrate that he is capable of acting independently of his conservative brethren on the bench, I prefer to believe that the newly appointed- judge is simply more reasonable than many of us have given him credit for.

Press gets trigger-happy

By now just about everyone knows that Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot Texas lawyer Harry Whittington last Saturday. Cheney and four other hunters spent the morning hunting, took a break for lunch and then went out for a second quail hunt after lunch at the Armstrong ranch in Texas.

Being 'right' may backfire on GOP in fall

Many times the elections are won because of the opposition's blunders. As I intently watch the development of the 06 election, I must say I am mystified and delighted with the apparent tactical blunder of the ideological wing of the GOP. I am not talking about the corruption that hit "The Hammer" and the Abramoff Scandal (Though they certainly hurt the GOP's reputation).

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, Will Haun makes several fallacious assertions in his article "A man worthy of office", but I want to focus on his assertion, in particular, that "preserving the family unit" means denying same-sex citizens and same-sex families equality under the law.

Marriage not for all

Recently, the issue of same sex marriage has taken a central place on our national stage. Since this issue will probably not go away anytime soon, it bears talking about. To begin, my readers who are familiar with my ideas will remember that my veracity knows no bounds; so it is in this vein that I write this article.

Staff editorial: One step forward, but two steps back for AU

Over four hundred students danced the night away at the Mayflower Hotel Saturday night at the annual Founder's Day Ball. The band and DJ had the crowd jamming and cha-cha sliding, and chocolate fountains and quesadillas kept everyone well-fed. The students who attended were diverse, there were no labels.

Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
