GOP: Full of hypocrisy

·

The modern-day Republican Party is an exercise in hypocrisy, a marriage of convenience between two groups with opposing interests.ÿ One camp is composed western-style libertarians who simply want limited government intervention in private matters.ÿ This strain of Republican wants simply to be able to live life and conduct business without interference from big brother.

Stop fanning flames

·

I take great offense to Issam Khoury's attack on the "free speech contingency" in his opinion piece on the Cartoon War in Monday's Eagle. We in said contingency understand very well the meaning of freedom. Indeed, the cartoons were published to illustrate an article on prevalent self-censorship in the media regarding Muslim issues.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, I just wanted to bring to your attention that Phil Bender is being put on by the RHA, SG, and GLC together. ÿThe article about the basketball recruitment flier seemed to imply that the SG is the only one organizing the event. ÿIn fact, the RHA is putting the most money into organizing the event.

A man worthy of office

In an election year, I'm always inclined to think about the Founders' hopes for the kinds of citizens that would fill our elected offices. When one studies the Founders, we discover what they really wanted in our leaders is usually a far cry from what we get.

Staff editorial: Muslim cartoon rage

The news of the Cheney shooting has hardly detracted from the coverage of the publication of cartoons insensitively depicting the Prophet Mohammed. The anger has spread throughout the Middle East, and there has been backlash against publications in the United States that have published them, to inform their readers about what has ignited the crisis.

Staff editorial: Facebook and AU

The popular website among college students has been attracting new clientele as of late. Incoming freshmen and employers are now logging on to Facebook. Some AU students have not been welcoming to the future eagles. An anti-class of 2010 group has sprung up with 25 members.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor: I was shocked by Riazul Raquib's editorial, "Freedom of expression does not equal racial ignorance," printed in your paper February 6. In it, Mr Raquib claims that Muslim governments "should be commended" for responding vehemently to cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, and that the Danish government, by blindly defending freedom of speech, had compromised its national security.

Opinion

Cartoons cross the line

I have been following closely the arguments regarding the recent riots across the Muslim world in response to the depictions of the Prophet Mohammad in European newspapers. ÿI am particularly astounded by the likes of arguments proferred by Mike Inganamort and the "free speech" contingency.

NCOR threatens campus community

I was very glad to see some discussion of NCOR in the last issue of the Eagle and to see that I was not alone in being disgusted and angered at what went on at our school last weekend. However, my disgust goes a little deeper than many who just had to walk through an alien MGC, taken over by the professionally homeless, made into the center for 9/11 conspiracies, anti-tampon booths, and other absurd fringe causes.

Basketball recruitment offends, demeans women

EMILY CAPONETTI This letter directly addresses my disappointment with the demeaning and insensitive conduct displayed by the Men's Basketball Office through their objectification of women in recent recruitment materials.ÿ The flier's flagrant promotion of sexist attitudes is undeniable in its description of Washington, DC as "the #1 place to find babes.

Staff editorial: Basketball brouhaha

A recruiting brochure for AU's men's basketball team caused an uproar and threats to pull funding for next weekend's Phil Bender festivities. The Graduate Student Leadership Council and Women's Initiative planned to hold their wallets if the basketball office did not apologize for advertising D.

Staff editorial: Park Bethesda plans

The university's apartment builiding is suffering from low occupancy and has become more of a liabiility than a cash cow. Housing and Dining has moved to remedy this, announcing management changes. Students will from now on be required to sign one year leases, as opposed to having the option for nine months.

Corrections

The Feb. 6 article, "Flip-flops, though fashionable, may be unhealthy" should have been attributed to American Word, where it was first published.

Column: Nickel and diming AU

For a student body that prides itself on liberal activism, social justice and sticking it to the man whenever possible, it never ceases to amaze me that AU students so often forget to look out for themselves. Sure, students were up in arms over the expense account abuses of Ladnergate, but then those were hard to miss.

No thanks, NCOR

I was going to keep quiet, but I cannot possibly stand idly by with the pro-NCOR conference columns that were all over the Eagle. ÿThey're message and mission could be positive, and it very well may be. ÿThat's not what I'm writing about. ÿTo be honest, those who were here this weekend were some of the most offensive and ignorant people I've ever encountered.

Staff editorial: Changes in the Nest

Students have been busy complaining about changes to the campus convenience store, the Eagle's Nest, as popular chips, cookies and other snacks have been replaced by organic products and healthy foods. The Eagle's Nest and Bon Appetit insist the inconvenience is temporary while they restock and reorganize the store.

Cartoons: take a chill pill

In a recent letter to the editor, Riazul Raquib attempts to justify, or at least explain, the violent protesting by some Muslims in Europe. He does so by arguing that Islam is essentially above criticism, much less comedy. Specifically, he states that "satires of Jesus may not create much unrest to the overall Christian community, [yet] the same principle does not simply carry over into the Muslim worldview.

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor: I am writing in response to Mr. Riazul Raquib's column in The Eagle. While I agree with Mr. Raquib that the several of the cartoons depicting Mohammad were childish and offensive, and that the riots in response to the cartoons have been "gross overreactions," I am particularly concerned with Mr.

Staff editorial: Some workout, eh?

The University of British Columbia recently received the dubious honor of being the first college in North America to offer a course in pole dancing. The course, being billed as exercise, has become on of the most popular new classes and is open to men and women.

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor I've been a student at American University for three years now and have put up with a lot but for the first time at this school I've been so outraged as to write a letter to the Eagle with this question, what happened to the Eagles Nest? I go down there to pick up some Tide to do laundry only to find that my trusty deterrgent has been replaced with some new no name environmentally friendly deterrgent I haven't heard of.
