Stop Alito on filibuster

·

ÿ Harriet Miers was a poor pick for the Supreme Court.ÿ She could not think for herself, and would have relied on the Bush White House to tell her how to rule on important issues.ÿ Although she seemed like a sure bet to be a conservative puppet, the right wing killed her nomination because they couldn't make sure that she'd be as fawning and uncritical as they wanted her to be.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, Jonathan McPike, in his recent editorial "McCain: O, What a Pain" stated that he believes the United States should be allowed to torture terrorists and suspected terrorists to force them to divulge information. "If the rest of the world objects to our torturing a terrorist to save even one American life, then it will not cost me one wink of sleep," he wrote.

Disney approach: exile

Who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me?ÿ Well it's not M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E.ÿ It's the Leslie Bains and her group of four. In the wake ofÿthe recent Town Hall meeting of current Trustee members on campus the groupÿof recently resigned members of the American Board of Trustees have penned a wonderful point-by-point body blow on the Ad-Hoc group of thirteen whoÿsupported Uncle Ben.

Staff editorial: NYU grad assistants seek job protections

Teaching assistants at New York University are entering their third week of striking for federal labor protections. The National Labor Relations board ruled last year that graduate assistants were not entitled to union protection , and therefore the benefits the university should provide.

Staff editorial: Urban ed. initiatives will help D.C. youth

The superintendent of the D.C. public school system spoke on campus this past week about intiatives aimed at improving education in a city with one of the worst school districts in the country. The overarching goal of the plan is to put more qualified teachers into schools, as well as critiquing the teaching methods of current instructors to seach for ways to improve.

Staff editorial: Making adoption an option in college

A bill currently before Congress would provide $10 million to be dispersed in 200 grants to colleges and universities to provide for pregnancy and adoption services. The sponsors the bill hope to offer another option other than abortion when women become pregnant in college.

McCain: O, what a pain

It is no secret that Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, and President George W. Bush do not quite get along. McCain has always cherished his reputation as a maverick, and he certainly has not minded wearing that mantle since President Bush slung a little mud his way in South Carolina before going on to win the nomination and the presidency in 2000.

Staff editorial: Minorities in higher ed need scholarships

According to new analysis, the percentage of minority students in American colleges is dropping at a dangerous rate. The National Council of Public Policy in Higher Education said that states need to do more to ensure that minorities continue on an upward trend in college graduation.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, Reading Will Haun and David Grossman's respective pieces in The Eagle last week typified the problem that exists in American politics: This tendency to go to the extremes.ÿ While Mr. Haun may have overstated the case for the religious founding of our nation, Mr.

Staff editorial: In memory: Chris Salazar 1983-2005

The AU campus has been deeply shaken by news of the death of Chris Salazar who, throughout his four years here, was arguably more recognizable a figure on campus than most student leaders, professors or administrators. Sunday morning's fatal fall ended a life defined by individuality, passion and empathy.

True academic integrity cuts in both directions

Wouldn't you find it ridiculous if the department of performing arts publicly criticized John Edwards' plan to end poverty? Or if the department of audio technology held a talk on campus about how eating McDonalds is bad for your health? Or if the department of economics were to hold an event criticizing India for claiming Kashmir as Indian territory and not part of Pakistan? I know I would find it, at the very least, a bit strange.

Staff editorial: Board of trustees: close, but no cigar

The board met last Thursday in an open forum with students and faculty. The aim was to make the transition process more transparent, but it was apparent that wounds still run deep over the departure of former president Benjamin Ladner. While we understand and share many of the concerns of the campus community, we feel it is immature to continue to complain about the Ladner saga.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, I was thoroughly disturbed by the column, "Religious roots run deep," printed Nov. 7.ÿThe entire premise, that America is solely a Christian nation, is elitist and bigoted. When Haun speaks of "our commonly shared values" or "our faith", it is obvious that he speaks about Christians and no one else, despite the author's reluctance in plainly saying so.

Corrections

In the Nov. 7 article, "Four UC students sentenced to jail," The Eagle incorrectly referred to the University of California Chico. Chico is a school in the California State University system, not part of the University of California system. In an Oct. 31 article about DCist.

Change has its costs, but status quo is worse

I would like to address the concerns of one of my readers, who In his letter to the editor published Nov, 4 he stated that "The only way, the board of trustees can be changed is through an act of Congress" and further admonishes students "to lobby our representatives" so that AU "can fix the fundamental flaws that [I] refuse to acknowledge need fixing.
