Staff editorial: "Girlcott" offensive, disgusting t-shirts

A group of high school girls in Pittsburgh organized a boycott, or as they called it, a "girlcott," of pricy clothing retailer Abercrombie and Fitch because of t-shirts the group deemed demeaning towards women. The story has gained national attention, with the girls being interviewed by Katie Couric on the "Today Show.

Staff editorial: Google Print offers books sans library

Internet beheamoth Google, which offers services such as GMail, Google Earth, and a picture editing service, Picassa, has found another niche to carve out for itself: books. For those of you who loathe treking to the library, Google now enables you to search for a book and topic, and then browse the relevant parts of the book.

Stay on message, AU demands board reform

Dear Students, As the Board of Trustees meets today, I felt it important to speak to the campus community. I am writing to reassure you that your student government is doing all it can to effectively advocate for you with the board of trustees. The decision to give now ex-President Ladner $3.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, Will Haun's statement in his November 7th column that "history shows that Christian values are at the heart of America's founding fathers, documents, law and influences" is startlingly absurd. When thinking of the founding fathers, perhaps Haun forgot that George Washington was a Deist and actually refused to see a priest on his deathbed.

Staff editorial: Drinking ignorance leads to death, jail

Four brothers of Chi Tau fraternity at the University of California-Chico were sentenced to jail after pleading guilty for the drinking-related death in February of one of their members, making a gross statement about the irresponsibility of college. students While at a party, the now deceased student drank excessive amounts of alcohol, and was given too much water by his brothers.

Religious roots run deep

America was founded on the values of the Jesuit Christian faith, and those that try and shut that out of American culture does so at the peril of the nation. History shows that Christian values are at the heart of America's founding fathers, documents, laws, and influences.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, This article is not about the ethics of the ex-president of American University but it is rather about the ethical dimensions revolving around what one might call "Ladner-gate." Pens whose ink was paid by Ladner were competing to tear him apart once he became officially the scapegoat of a political affair that will always remain behind closed boards.

Staff editorial: Facebook expression is no place for hate

A student at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh has been disciplined by the school for starting a Facebook group against the gay-straight alliance at the private Catholic institution, a right he absolutely holds, but executed in repulsive, if not atrocious, taste.

The Eagle
Opinion

AU students: grow up!

Everyone else has put in his two cents on Ladnergate, so I suppose that I might as well do the same. Blame it on the uninteresting news cycle. Winston Churchill - and a lot of others since - once said, "Show me a young conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart.

Staff editorial: Fired up about smoking in D.C.

The ban on smoking in restaurants and bars in the District is all but assured, and passions are ignited on both sides. Smokers are understandably upset that their ability to blow smoke is being fanned out by others. Some non-smokers are upset that they have to cough through a meal and leave smelling like they were smoking themselves.

Thumbs up... One-Millionth Book... Bender Library recently received a special delivery: book number one million. No word yet on how useful students will find it, but there's a lot of books like that over there. Mickey D's health labels... Rumor has it that the fast food giant will start to label their burgers with health information.

Staff editorial: Students on Board; non-profit reform

Good news AU: it doesn't look our new board of trustees chair is completely out of touch with the way boards are run. The new chairman, Gary Abramson, has signaled that he would like to include students and faculty on committees when the board is reformed.

Corrections

The Oct. 27 Valley of the Molls: McGruff helps keep October safe, a quote describing car-jackings was wrongly attributed to the Director of Research and Evaluation of the National Crime Prevention Center. The director made no such statement. The Eagle apologizes for this error.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor, In the October 31st edition of the Eagle, Eve Gatewood wrote, "Sometimes, even if one is right, fighting for the principle of something is not worth the cost. In the future any action taken to this magnitude should be the product of reflection and substantial thought.

Creating a reputation, protecting diplomas

I thought that once President Ladner was dismissed from the university and his severance package was decided that the situation would have finally reached its conclusion. Now the Senate Finance Committee has requested documents regarding Ladner's dismissal and the investigation.

Corrections and Clarifications

In the Oct. 24 issue, The Eagle included erroneous information in an article entitled, "Sukkot celebrated by AU Jewish groups." Community memebers were invited to an even called "Pizza in the Hut," not "Pizza in the Sukkah." Hillary Blank, a source for the article, was wrongly attributed as belonging to the School of Public Affairs.

Staff editorial: Ladner fight plays out in the Senate

When the phrase, "it would take an act of congress" is used to describe something, it usually means that something is going to take an inordinately long amount of time and will be excruciatingly difficult to achieve. On Thursday, the board of trustees received a letter from Sen.

Staff editorial: No security threats on campus network

The Federal Government is requiring all Internet service providers and institutions that provide Internet access to upgrade their technology to broadband that can be monitored for security reasons. AU would have to spend an estimated $3 million on the federally mandated upgrades since it provides Internet access to students, faculty and staff.
