Opinion: Meat-eating event mocks grave issue

·

On March 18, 600 AU community members pledged to be vegetarian and helped raise more than $120 to help animals rescued from abusive homes. Some made the decision to participate for one day, some for the rest of their lives. Either way, these individuals took this step because they know that a vegetarian diet saves human lives, animal lives and the environment.

Opinion: D.C. a valuable resource

·

Some students refer to it as an abroad program, others consider it a semester college-swap program, and some refer to its official title, The Washington Semester Program at American University. But no matter what you call it, I know it has changed me forever.

The Eagle

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor: In the April 14 issue of The Eagle on Page 4, there is an editorial called "Remembrance Week: never forget." I have no beef with this article and completely agree with its content and message. The only problem I have is that this article mentioned every genocide of the 20th century except the first genocide of the 20th century, the Armenian genocide.

Staff editorial: 2005 SC Grades

Each year following the SC transition ceremony, The Eagle grades outgoing SC executives and departments on their performance over the past year. Unlike many AU professors, The Eagle does not inflate grades - that is: A = excellent, B = above average, C = average, D = below average, F = failing.

The Eagle
Opinion

'Christian' not a stance

As much as some on the left and in the mainstream media rail against religion looking twice at politics, they sure don't mind mixing the two when it serves their goals, namely the death of the pope. Now that the conservative stumbling block those devout Catholics labeled John Paul is gone, many are hoping that the church will make a left turn and follow Europe down the wide road.

Opinion: Signs of bigotry lurk on AU campus

April 14, 2005: I walked into the McKinley Building Room 207 at around 6:45 p.m., looking for a quiet area to peacefully finalize my presentation on Angola due about a week later. I placed a chair close to the door so that, should I fall asleep, no one would enter the room without making enough noise to wake me up.

Opinion

Poverty: a common foe

Every Tuesday and Friday afternoon I drive by the White House, the U.S. Capitol, opulent embassies and sprawling, grand residences in order to make my way to a low-income housing development in Southeast D.C. The tragic irony of the location's vantage point is that it provides some of the best views of the city from within the city.

Opinion

Staff editorial: Remembrance week: never forget

This week is the third annual remembrance of the Holocaust observed at American University. Throughout the week there will be many events to commemorate one of the worst travesties in history. Names of victims will be read, and a survivor of the Holocaust will speak to students.

The Eagle
Opinion

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor: The Eagle's staff editorial titled "Bible Should Skip Class," although characteristic for an AU Eagle editorial, laden with rhetoric and stock language, really does not make an effective argument against teaching creationism in schools. Evolutionists, more times than not, find themselves left of center on the political spectrum, and with this comes a typical liberal need for being accepting of other perspectives.

Opinion

Opinion: Religion always the left's scapegoat

Russell Croteau It took longer than I expected, but sure enough in Monday's edition of The Eagle the anti-Catholic bigotry of an ignorant secularist was given a forum to spew his hateful and offensive rhetoric. The death of Pope John Paul II is a deeply emotional event in the lives of the world's 1.

Opinion: President of Pura Vida responds to controversy

Please allow me a moment to respond to the specific questions addressed to Pura Vida in the April 7 issue of The Eagle by Ibbie Hedrick, Et al. As a card-carrying capitalist and Harvard MBA, as well as the co-founder of one of the country's largest independent sellers of Certified Fair Trade coffee (structured as a public charity to direct resources to help at-risk children), I am delighted to sell our product on college campuses across the nation to a growing base of customers who are passionate about great coffee but who expect - no, demand - that their purchases do good at the same time.

The Eagle
Opinion

Opinion: Pope both conservative and innovative

Not only was the article "Pope's Death Reveals Hypocrisy" offensive, it was blatantly wrong, unwarranted and ignorant. Russell Allen should attempt to become an informed writer if he wants anyone to take him seriously. It is apparent to me, as a Catholic with 13 years of Catholic education under my belt, that Allen knows very little about the Catholic Church and the beliefs of her members.

The Eagle
Opinion

Opinion: Pope deserves reverence, not cynicism

As a dedicated reader of The Eagle, I was shocked and disturbed to read the April 11 editorial titled "Pope's Death Reveals Hypocrisy." I feel the views expressed in this opinion are hurtful and do not show any appreciation or empathy for the incredibly complex world in which we all live.

All Thumbs

Thumbs up The "Carnivore Initiative" ... The College Republicans were out and about on the Quad Wednesday, celebrating their views and partaking in free food. This is proof that there is more to political action than radical activism. Silent Day ... This event, put on by AU Queers and Allies, gave students an opportunity to demonstrate for gay rights.

Staff editorial: Would you like a finger with that?

Fast-food eaters nationwide were frightened and disgusted by the news that a Wendy's customer recently found a severed human finger in her chili. Despite the potential public-relations nightmare, Wendy's has done a good job handling the situation, first declaring that all of its employees are in possession of all 10 of their fingers and then offering $50,000 to anyone who could provide information leading to finger's owner.

Opinion: SC prez reflects on his term

Hello friends. When you read this Monday's Eagle, you will notice two major changes in your student government. First, you'll notice that I won't be here anymore, with Kyle Taylor becoming your new president. Second, you'll notice that it will no longer be the "Student Confederation," but the "Student Government.

Opinion: Pope's death reveals hypocrisy

Looking out my apartment window, I see the "Now Leasing" and American flags at half staff. They've been that way since Pope John Paul II's death on April 2. Anyone with his ear to the ground or his eyes on the news has noticed that the death of the pope has been the biggest news story in recent memory, even rivaling the death of our 40th American president, Ronald Reagan, last summer.
