Their words: James Gardner, SC President

In working with University administrators for three years as a member of the Student Advocacy Center, I have learned that they are not the stingy, heartless ogres that some candidates for student government try to portray them as. Labeling the administration an adversary seems like an excuse for having nothing substantial to say.

Their words: Kyle Taylor, SC President

My name is Kyle Taylor and I'm running for SC president. My time as Eagle Nights director and SC vice president has inspired me to pursue this position and given me the skills I need to reach out to you, the students, and program effectively to develop policies that are important to you.

The Eagle

Their words: Ali Khan, SC Comptroller

My name is Ali Khan and I am a finance major in Kogod. I am running for comptroller to make sure your money is efficiently managed and to hold the SC accountable for its decisions. I am about the students, not the special interests. I think our student government can be improved.

Their Words: Nick Johnson, SC President

I thank The Eagle for providing space for the SC candidates, and I would like to highlight some aspects of my platform. Our campus shuttles provide an excellent service, but they are not operating as safely or as timely as they should. A lot of students have horror stories of being on the shuttle when our safety has been compromised, and that needs to stop.

Their words: Joe Gallina, President

The problems we face are right in front of us, and they must be confronted. The administration either fails to act or, when it does, does not take the student voice into consideration. It's wrong that our phone lines are being taken out of our rooms. It's wrong that we will be forced to pay for Ruckus next year.

Opinion: Isolating minority history marginalizes minorities

As this year's Black History Month comes to a close, with it ends the teaching in our public schools of anything to do with black Americans, with the exception of slavery, until next February. Why? Because many teachers and school boards see it as the time in which they are to teach the history of black Americans.

Student Government Endorsements

Every year, The Eagle interviews all Student Confederation candidates for their executive offices, and endorses one candidate for each position. This year, with Kevin Gilnack's late withdrawal from the secretary race, there are no candidates on the ballot for secretary, and so we will not be endorsing anyone as a write-in candidate.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor: I just read The Eagle's most recent sex column from Feb. 17 regarding the abundance of hookups and the demise of dating. It hit a note with me. As a 25-year-old guy who wishes he could go back to the children's table during family gatherings, I find myself in an awkward position.

Staff Editorial: Be smart, discreet with your blog

Several controversies have recently erupted regarding people's web logs getting them in trouble with their employer. Some have gotten fired because of their comments online about the company they work for. This is a very slippery topic; because of the newness of blogs, there is no established protocol on how to deal with them.

Staff Editorial: Don't stand by, offer assistance

Picture this: You're standing around by the Tenleytown Metro stop in the middle of the day, minding your own business. You look up and see a man in hot pink accost a young lady and steal her purse. The man then flees, though not very well, as the young lady tries to find a way to get back her purse.

Opinion: What is AU doing with your money?

Do you ever wonder what happens to your $36,000-plus when your parents (or hard-working students, in some cases) write that check to AU? Well, after listening to President Ladner justify higher tuition recently, students should be even more worried about how their money is spent.

Staff Editorial: Security cameras could help safety

The case of the pornographic etchings may finally be solved. This week, Public Safety apprehended a man it said was in his 60s who was caught carving a vulgar image into the wall of a Mary Graydon Center elevator. The man was caught only because of the surveillance cameras in the MGC elevators.

Opinion: U.S. right to stay out of Kyoto

The Kyoto Protocol took effect on Wednesday. It requires 35 industrialized nations to cut their emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to levels equal to or below what they emitted in 1990 by the end of 2012. The United States is not a party to the treaty.

Staff Editorial: AU athlete goes pro

AU Eagles soccer star Shawn Kuykendall was drafted by D.C. United of Major League Soccer on Feb. 4, as the final pick of the final round of the draft. Kuykendall, the first Eagle to be drafted into the MLS in two years, highlights the success that AU Athletics has experience in recent years.

America should heed Kyoto

July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong becomes the first human being to set foot on an extra-planetary body. After reaching the lunar surface, Armstrong famously proclaimed, "That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind." We have later come to find out that these timely words were much less divinely inspired than they were quickly improvised.

Staff Editorial: Cab fares & unfairs

The District of Columbia will soon begin to experiment with a new metered taxicab system, possibly to replace the current zone system that they operate on. Meters will be implimented to some cabs on a trial basis this spring. Funny, during the trial period riders will be told how much it would have cost had they been metered, but still have to pay as prescribed in the zone system.

Honesty essential in political debate

Every Monday and Thursday after my 9:55 class, I pick up the latest copy of The Eagle. After laughing over the police blotter, I make my way to the conservative or liberal column. Each day I enjoy the rants from both sides about a current issue. However, putting ideologies aside, I find a striking difference between the articles.
