Maira Kalman creates online world of blog books

·

OK. This is where I fess up my own vanity: I have a blog. I do write on it. Not daily, but often. Yes, you can search for it if you want to. The topics are sporadic — there is very little theme other than life itself. Welcome to the next new style of writing: the Artistic Blogger. The Artistic Blogger comments on life as it arrives. She has her own voice, and augments it with illustrations, links, music and photos. Maira Kalman is an Artistic Blogger.

AU’s Image Awareness Week redefines beauty

·

The January cover of Elle reads “21 Days to a Sexier Look, Sweeter Love Life, and Hot Bod.” The February cover of Marie Claire reads, “Winter Workout, Get a Gold Medal Bod.” The March cover of Cosmo reads “Curb Your Cravings without Feeding Your Face.”

‘MY STUPID MOUTH’ — Starting off his concert at the Verizon Center with “Heartbreak Warfare,” a song off his latest album, John Mayer set the scene for a concert celebrating the heartbroken. The crowd consisted of everyone from grandmothers to mothers and daughters, all enjoying his night of song and banter.

John Mayer packs Verizon Center with heartbreak

·

It’s hard to tell who John Mayer really is or who he wants you to think he is. Everything seems layered, every response immediately analyzed for content and tone. To magazines, he’s a playboy; to the protestors, he’s a racist; to those who knew him a decade ago, he’s just some kid from Connecticut who plays the guitar. But whatever or whoever he is, thousands of fans love him and will continue to support him no matter what.

Hanky code gives new meaning to old neckwear

You know that something has reached official hipster accessory status when queer electroclash crazy person/former elementary school teacher Peaches has a song about it. Such is the case with the bandana and her song “Hanky Code” about them. Taking no precautions against profanity or sexual explicitness (she wouldn’t be Peaches without it), she cautions hipsters against fashion statements they may not be aware of: “Better know your hanky code/Before you go and shoot your load/Excuse me what’s that hanging out of your pocket?/Do you actually know what that means?”

Lisa Kudrow produces NBC's 'Who Do You Think You Are?'

When asked to define yourself, how do you answer? Lisa Kudrow could list achievements in her roles as an actress or her behind the scenes work as a producer, but she is also a person with a deeply-rooted European family history. Most often, when asked to answer who we are, we look to our past.

Johnny Depp emphasizes talent with role choices

Johnny Depp is one of those actors that seems to always get it right. Whether he’s playing a boy with scissors for hands or a Keith Richards-inspired pirate, he’s found a place among other character actors where he’s neither under nor overrated. Twenty-six years and nearly 50 films later, Depp ...

KINGS IN COURT — Michael Hayden plays the titular king in David Muse’s production of Henry V for the Shakespeare Theatre Company. Hayden’s energetic performance gives the complex and intriguing plotline of the Bard’s tale a significant human element, aided by Muse’s expert stagecraft.

Hayden leads in D.C. Henry V production

The Shakespeare Theatre Company is notorious for always putting a certain spin on classics. From driving a car on stage in the middle of “King Lear” to keeping it old school with an all-male cast in “Romeo and Juliet,” this incredible playhouse never fears straying too far from convention.

Scott-Heron, Pavement among bands hoping for 2010 comeback

Great musicians aren’t supposed to go out in a blaze of transcendent glory. Bands and singers who break up or disappear at the peak of their careers when they can apparently go nowhere but up break the natural progression of musical careers. We expect to become disillusioned by our heroes — to be able to say that we loved them once before they fell back to our level.

Keep chills out with ‘Snowpocalypse Chili’ reciple

Spring may seem like it’s just around the corner, but until then I suspect we have more than a few cold winter nights ahead of us. So here are a few of my favorite stews and braises — simple comfort foods to enjoy with a good bottle of wine while you listen to the cold wind rattle your windows. Stewing ...

RAIN OR SHINE — The Used played a raucous show at 9:30 club last Wednesday for hundreds of screaming fans. Punk band Drive A and metalcore group Atreyu opened the show, getting the crowd amped up for a night filled with moshpits, crowd surfing and spitting.

The Used return to screamo roots on new tour

Screamo would like you to know that it is still very much alive. Last Wednesday, hardcore alt-rock bands Drive A, Atreyu and The Used performed at the 9:30 club for hundreds of angry teens who came for blood.

FALL OF A KING — Despite a strong performance by the supporting cast of Shakespeare’s “Richard II,” lead actor Michael Hayden brought down the play with over-acting and a lack of substance. Hayden is also simultaneously starring in the Shakespeare Theater Company’s production of “Henry V.”

D.C.'s Shakespeare Theatre Co. poorly casts ‘Richard II’

In terms of both plot and performance, it’s the titular character (played by Michael Hayden) who causes all the problems in the Shakespeare Theater Company’s production of Shakespeare’s “Richard II.” To borrow a line from another of Shakespeare’s plays, Hayden is “all sound and fury, signifying nothing.” It is a credit to the other actors that they manage to salvage at least a little bit of the production. When Hayden was offstage or minimized, the play was watchable — otherwise, good luck.

GWU's Andy Warhol exhibit displays artist’s forgotten work

Whether you like him or not, you have probably heard of pop art artist Andy Warhol. A leading figure in the pop art movement, Warhol created paintings, films and silkscreen prints. When most people think of Warhol, they think of his famous “Campbell’s Soup Cans,” his bright yellow banana painting or fluorescent silk screens of Marilyn Monroe. However, a trip to George Washington University’s Luther W. Brady Art Gallery reveals a new side of the notorious socialite.

DOUBLE EXIT — DC9 hosts a number of small and upcoming bands such as Exit Clov (pictured). The U Street venue offers a bar-like atmosphere with the benefits of a live-music venue, creating a space unique to the downtown D.C. area. Because of its obscurity and hidden location, DC9 can maintain the exclusivity of a high-end bar and popular draw for a number of late partiers and rambunctious musicians.

DC9 draws in bands as life of afterparty

After living here long enough, one may think that D.C. is a jaded city. From packs of business-suited men rushing through McPherson Square to business-suited students stressing about their internship on Capitol Hill, the District can begin to feel a little formal. Even options for music seem limited — unless you go looking.
