Fall festival gives color to seasonal activities

·

Despite the presence of numerous fall festivals all over the District featuring the classic autumnal activities involving apples, pumpkins and leaves, the third annual Ganymede Arts’ fall festival certainly does not feel the need to fit in.

MAGIC SCHOOL BUS — The Newseum is celebrating the birth of music journalism as well as the fortieth anniversary of Woodstock with its newest exhibit. This display explores not only the the festival’s famous musicians, but also the stories of the reporters and photographers who covered it.

Newseum celebrates song

It seems as though the summer of 2009 is attempting to recreate the inimitable summer of 1969 — the summer of peace and love. The counterculture is making a comeback, having been re-imagined in films like Ang Lee’s “Taking Woodstock” as well as in fashion and literature. Now it seems like D.C. is finally catching on.

Markets freshen summer dishes

Let’s face it: summer is pretty much over. The pools are closed, the beach is a distant memory and all that free time you used to have has been replaced with classes, homework and that loathsome part-time job. But there’s one bit of summer that will be around for a little while longer: the farmers market.

Tourists attract tourists in Spain

MADRID — As the days went by, I noticed everywhere my group went, any Americans within a four block radius would inevitably find us. I wondered what it was about my group that was attracting every Yankee this side of the Pyrenees.

REC ROOM — As ‘Parks and Recreation’ returns for its sophomore season, viewers can expect much more character development. The show is trying to break away from frequent comparisons to ‘The Office,’ which features similar humor and a documentary-type format.

‘Parks’ steps away from ‘Office’

Tired of superficial reality shows? Looking for a laugh because you’ve seen too many shows about lawyers and crime? Or perhaps you are an Amy Poehler fan and miss her work on “Saturday Night Live.” Either way, in an interview with The Eagle, stars Poehler and Aziz Ansari answered questions as to why we should tune in to the second season of their comedy “Parks and Recreation,” a mockumentary that satires a local government in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. The eccentric bureaucrat Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, strives to beautify the town of Pawnee and aims to ultimately become the first woman president. According to Poehler, Knope would “create a Central Park in every city” as well as “mandatory dance parties in public schools.”

COMING TO ‘AMREEKA’ — Cherien Dabis’ new film “Amreeka” examines the harsh realities of moving to America from Palestine in the fragile time of March 2003. The characters in the film face discrimination from classmates and employers due to their ethnic background. The film opens in D.C. Sept. 25.

American dream becomes nightmare

Immigrating to the United States is tough. But more than anything else, “Amreeka” is about coming to terms with what it means to be an Arab living in small-town America.

Have 'Mercy' on new drama

With a new television season comes another medical drama hitting the airwaves. This month it's "Mercy," a show centering on nurse Veronica Callahan (Taylor Schilling), who has just returned to Mercy Hospital following a tour of duty in Iraq. Also part of the nursing staff are Veronica's best friend, Sonia Jimenez (Jamie Lee Kirchner) and Chloe Payne (Michelle Trachtenberg), a naïve newcomer fresh out of nursing school.

'9' nears film perfection

Director Shane Acker has accomplished something not easily done: he has made a world of six-inch tall puppets engaging and terrifying, turning furniture into mountains and rooms into chasms. Visually and audibly, "9" is nothing short of magnificent.

Butterfly takes off at 9:30 club

Boucher's performance of "Scary Fragile" was exceptional; it showed her depth as a musician who could write a ballad. With a morose tone as an opening, the melody carried the recurring lyrics of "It's scary to be fragile in this turning world/this world, it turns me upside down." She then quickly uplifted the crowd with "To Feel Loved," showing her alt-rock side with a strong, clean strumming pattern and an added string arrangement in the middle.

THE WAY SHE IS -- Ingrid Michaelson, who broke into the mainstream through the use of her songs on TV, is slated to hit the 9:30 club stage.

Ingrid sure to woo 'Everybody'

The evening of Sept. 21 is sure to be a great night for the music scene in the District. Why, you might ask? Ingrid Michaelson, queen of "Grey's Anatomy" and Old Navy commercials, returns to the 9:30 club. She is sure to bring tons of sass along with her as she promotes her new album, "Everybody," which just dropped in August.

Set makes or breaks show at Virgin Mobile Festival

Recently, I was one of approximately 35,000 people (whoa!) from across the country who managed to get tickets to the latest (free) iteration of the Virgin Mobile Festival. While the festival organizers made the questionable decision of giving douche-rock purveyors, par-excellence Blink-182 the headlining spot, the bands they booked to back them up more than made up for that oversight (especially given the price tag).
