Being healthy goes beyond looking fit

·

My first-hand struggles and missteps have given me a lot of insight. I've learned that being healthy is a lot simpler than it is made out to be, as long as you use some common sense. If something sounds dumb, like drinking only lemons, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for a week, it probably is -- and it's probably bad for your health.

LOVE ME, BABY -- In their latest show, the Washington Shakespeare Company have decided to put their own spin on the classic french tragedy "La Dame aux Camelias," by Alexandre Dumas, fils, creating the satirical play "Camille: A Tearjerker." The show runs through Sept. 27.

Satire cries for emotion

·

The world in which a young theater company lives is exciting, dark and risky. Unlike some of the more established theatre companies in D.C., groups like the Washington Shakespeare Company are willing to choose different playwrights and take bolder liberties. Hell, they'll even do a whole show in drag. Enter WSC's first show of the season, Charles Ludlam's drag classic, "Camille: A Tearjerker."

DOWN UNDER -- Works of various Aboriginal artists will be on display at the Katzen Arts Center starting Tuesday, Sept. 8. The above piece, by Trevor \"Turbo\" Brown, is entitled \"Dreamtime kangaroo and bird.\"

Extensive art display finds home in Katzen

·

If you're looking for a bit of culture and artistic uniqueness as a D.C. student, look no further than across the street. AU's Katzen Arts Center is host to both local and world-renowned art exhibits that are free to the public. Four new exhibits covering various mediums and histories will be available to view at Katzen beginning this September.

HIGH TIMES -- Joshua Mays, who hails from Philadelphia, brought his spray art to D.C. to inspire those who pass by his works. Mays' work is in the vein of one of the world's best-known in the genre, Banksy. His mural, along with those of the rest of the participants of Mural Jam, can be seen near the Rhode Island Metrorail stop.

Street art makes its way inside

I must say that sitting here in my dorm is a lot different than I remember thinking it would be about a week ago. I've met some interesting people (to say the least), and some I'm interested in getting to know better. Aside from the people, D.C. is enough to make someone want to go to school here. With ...

'Nunchucks' outplay bands at Black Cat club

The Black Cat looks like it would be a dark, garage-like room, but the inside is more reminiscent of a classic bar, equipped with pool tables, a jukebox and a cigarette machine. Bands play at the Black Cat on a low stage, as if they were an extension of the crowd. It was a Sunday night, so there were ...

PURE EXTRACT -- Directed and written by Mike Judge, who is known for his relatable film \"Office Space,\" \"Extract\" hits theaters this Friday, Sept. 4. Unfortunately, Judge\'s newest film lacks the original humor that made the former so popular. The film also lacks a discernable plot and, despite its title, focuses more on a con-man plot than it does on the extract factory the main character owns.

Judge's 'Extract' loses 'Office' humor, struggles to entertain

Mike Judge's new comedy "Extract" is amusing while it lasts but is quick to fade into the background with the rest of funny but unremarkable cinema. While nothing stands out as really wrong with the film, it isn't particularly good. The acting is believable, the gags creative and the laughing genuine. ...

GIRLS GONE WILD -- Taffety Punk Theatre Company\'s all-female production of \"Measure for Measure\" will be coming to the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop Sept. 8. Kimberly Gilbert stars as Angelo (left) opposite Esther Williamson as Isabella.

AU a cappella group brings 'Glee' to capital

When Fox was looking to promote their soon-to-be hit "Glee" this past Monday, they turned to Treble in Paradise, AU's premier, all-female a cappella group. "Glee," a musical comedy premiering next month, follows the story of a high school glee club in Lima, Ohio. When it came to promotion, nothing was more appropriate than an a cappella performance on Fox's Early Morning Show.

Hippie film burns out

Grade: C+ If you're curious or open-minded enough to think maybe there was more to the hippie movement of the 1960s than just drugs and free love, seeing Ang Lee's "Taking Woodstock," a dramatization of the concert attended by half a million young people in 1969, won't provide much further education ...

'District 9' mirrors domestic destruction

Up in my hometown outside of Philadelphia, the threat of storms is taken very seriously. Residents treat looming remnants of tropical storms like the promise of nuclear apocalypse, stocking up on enough bread, milk and other perishable goods to last them well into 2019 -- just in case. The rain that accompanies these storms is comparable to that of a soaking in the Sea World Shamu splash zone, yet time after time and storm after storm, the public response is dependably overdramatic.
