STRANGE ENCOUNTERS - The unlikely heroes of the J.J. Abrams-produced "Cloverfield" document their adventures on a home video camera. This point of view puts the audience right in the middle of the movie's action. However, the home video camera approach le

Shaky camera work mars 'Cloverfield'

·

"Cloverfield," the much-hyped monster movie produced by "Lost" creator J.J. Abrams, is one horrific vision of things falling apart - not simply because an unidentified monster is destroying New York City right before our heroes' eyes, but also because the film's director, Matt Reeves, destroys the film's provocative concept right before the audience's eyes.

Travel seas of pleasure with new sex column

·

Greetings from the decks of the pirate ship, "The Lusty Saber." We are Captain Jane De Belleville, First Mate Jack Rackam and Chief Wench Grace O'Malley (aliases, all). We hope you will join us on our high-seas adventures in search of booty. We shall brave never-before charted waters, come face-to-face with the most unruly of seamen and plunge into the hidden depths of Davy Jones' locker (if you catch our drift).

Language barrier, hygiene prove difficult

·

One of the first things everyone tells you before you go abroad is to prepare for culture shock. As stereotypical as it sounds, it is very true. I have only been in Prague for a week, and it is all still setting in. The most difficult thing so far has been the language barrier, which speaks to the larger cultural difference between Czechs and Americans.

NO PANTS, NO SERVICE? - Was this guy wearing pants? We'll never know. But for now, we can only hope to think so. With a blazer, of course.

Pants-less jokesters take passengers for ride

D.C. residents are generally not known for their willingness to let loose. Whether it's the politicians and lobbyists in suits downtown or the over-achieving, if transient, college set, our nation's capital is seldom known as place to let your hair down. But on Saturday afternoon, about 200 people gathered to prove the stereotype wrong.

U Street area restaurant connects community, dishes up poetry

Much like the poetry in which it is rooted, the beauty and interest of Busboys and Poets lies in its contrast. Sunlight streams through the expansive windows during lunch hour at Busboys and Poets, the restaurant, coffee shop and bookstore located in the heart of Washington's bustle two blocks from the U Street Metro stop.

MORTAL COMBAT - In the latest installment of the "Kingdom Under Fire" series, "Circle of Doom" players control one of six characters instead of commanding an army. Here, a character fights multiple enemies, demonstrating the game's new combat systems.

Review: 'Kingdom' invades diverse genres

The "Kingdom Under Fire" series has come a long way from its roots as a relatively unknown real-time strategy game. "Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom" is the chronological sequel to "KUF: The Crusaders," which successfully established the series as a reliable strategy game on the original Xbox.

Dorm recipe: Outrageous orzo peppers anyone's palate

Whenever I buy pasta, I usually gravitate towards the penne or the farfalle box because that is what I am used to eating. But those get old, and I wanted to try something new. I had never heard anything about orzo pasta before and thought I would give it a shot.

Songstress lacks emotional depth

Ayo "Joyful" (Interscope) Sounds like: Music to be shared with your mother or aunt. Review: "Headed For"

Tom McBride "Headed For" (Wicked Good) Sounds like: If O.A.R. were a one-man-band without much spunk. Grade: C+ There is some really good local music in the D.C. area, but the jury is still out on Tom McBride. His new EP, "Headed For," is a work of some highs and some mediocrity.

The Darjeeling Limited This is the most traditional addition to Wes Anderson's quintet of loser-takes-all fables as films. It's also one of the most enjoyable. By no means sappy, the film follows three estranged brothers as they struggle to find common ground and forge their own way into the foothills of the Himalayas, hoping to reunite with their long-absent mother.

Poignant book details Allies' Italian campaign

In 2001, Rick Atkinson came out with the Pulitzer Prize-winning first installment of his "Liberation Trilogy," which chronicles the U.S. Army's experience in Europe during World War II. In his first installment, "An Army at Dawn," Atkinson portrayed an Army still in its fetal crawl stage as it blundered about North Africa in poorly planned invasions and crushed defeats at the hands of the Axis powers.

Lessons in Europe translate to States

This past weekend, I flew to Paris to visit a fellow AU student and take in the City of Lights. After three months of being away from home, the two of us chatted excitedly about the challenges we faced and the journeys we took, giving me an opportunity to reflect on the highs and lows of studying in Krakow.

Doin' it: Hardcastle gets AU into magic position

I've been sidestepping this for a whole semester. In addressing abortion, STIs, domination and contraceptives, I've avoided what this column is actually about: sex. For my last column, I thought I'd talk about the main sexual positions. I'm less aware of anal sex positions because I don't have that experience, but I'll try to touch on that also.
