Courage leads to adventure in Beirut

·

When I tell people that I was recently in Beirut, they generally say it was brave of me to go. To be honest, I'm really a chicken. If I had known there was going to be a constitutional crisis in Lebanon while I was there, I never would have bought my plane tickets from Istanbul, where I am studying abroad, to Beirut.

Genre-bending MC burns up 9:30 club

Any artist who performs at the 9:30 club typically thanks the audience - the people of D.C. M.I.A., the multigenre, London-based rapper, chanted additional shout-outs to the CIA and FBI, organizations that once assisted in banning her entry into the United States and preventing her from returning to her Brooklyn apartment.

Lampooning religion with 'Sister Mary'

Christopher Durang's "Sister Mary Ignatius Explains it All" is anything but a typical holiday play. The AU Players production pokes fun at Catholics, Jews, gay people and, hey, even you. The "school day" begins with Sister Mary (Ryan Tanner-Read, a freshman in the College of Arts and Sciences) and her 7-year-old boy-toy Thomas (Tucker Shelton, a freshman in CAS) explaining concepts of heaven, "fairly unpleasant" purgatory and hell and listing celebrities who are going there.

Review: 'Enchanted' appeals only to kids

The mention of Disney movies automatically elicits thoughts of fairy-tale fiction wrought with the overwhelming power of true love. These stories are typically told with the aid of corny dialogue, even cornier songs and a vast array of magical forest animals.

Dorm recipe: Fluffy brownies for perfect finals study breaks

For my last recipe of the semester, I wanted to show how to make a simple and easy dessert. With four ingredients, this is the simplest recipe yet. The idea came from a good friend of mine. I have since altered it by using a boxed brownie mix and adding walnuts and chocolate chips.

SURF KING - Dick Dale's "Misirlou" captures the essence of the genre he helped to pioneer. A surf reinvention of a Greek folk classic, the exotic riffs inspired everyone from the Beach Boys to Quentin Tarantino.

Top five innovative guitar visionaries

Before Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, there was delta-bred rhythm and blues. And before John Travolta yakked about Big Macs with Samuel L. Jackson and twisted with Uma Thurman, there was surf guitar and rockabilly fusion. These guitarists have influenced everyone from The Cramps to Quentin Tarantino, and while Hendrix and Eric Clapton may reign supreme on others' lists, neither would have a leg or amp to stand on without the following influential trailblazers.

'October Road' story line lays out predictable path

The coming-back-home-after-a-ridiculously-long-absence has been fertile subject matter for many a sitcom and movie. "October Road" plumbs that paradigm with mixed results - for one, from a plausibility perspective, it's a bit difficult to believe how someone could just "disappear" for 10 years and never call home once while he is off pursuing a writing career built on, naturally, a best-selling novel portraying all his hometown friends in a less-than-flattering fashion.

Thanksgiving takes on new meaning overseas

As an American living and studying abroad, I seem to forget that life still continues back in the States. More specifically, until a few days ago, I completely forgot that my favorite U.S. holiday, Thanksgiving, is upon us. Of course, there is always sentimentality associated with things that involve groups of people you love coming together to eat good food, enjoy each other's presence and celebrate life.
