Metal innovators love tour, despite criticism

Slayer, one of the world's most renowned metal bands, is currently touring in support of the release of their long-awaited and greatly anticipated album, "Christ Illusion." The band's 10th studio album, "Christ Illusion" is the first album to come out featuring the original Slayer lineup in 15 years.

Following the release of 'Christ Illusion,' Slayer rocked the 9:30 club.

Slayer intimidates crowd with skills

·

Walking toward the 9:30 club, one certainly knew what was happening last Monday night. Screams of "SLAYER!" echoed across V St. and announced to D.C. who was in charge for the night. The line stretching all the way around the corner was made up of everyone from old thrashers in biker jackets and cowboy boots to hardcore kids in hoodies and New Balances.

Photo exhibit showcases early years of D.C. punk

The punks have reclaimed Georgetown - at least temporarily. Until March 3, Govinda Gallery's hole-in-the-wall, 34th Street location offers punk enthusiasts a nostalgic sanctuary from the District's snow-covered sidewalks. Candid, mantle-worthy portraits of Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye, strategically stuck to the walls with masking tape in punk's minimalist style, survey the sundry smaller squares that capture their combat-boot-clad compatriots.

The Women's Initiative brings empowerment and self-understanding to the stage this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in its presentation of "The Vagina Monologues." Latest technology tells ageless lessons

When my oldest sister left for college in 1993, she took an electronic word processor. It was more advanced than a standard typewriter, but still lacked the spelling or grammar checks now standard on any word processing program. When my second sister departed for college in '99, she took a small desktop computer with her.

Book teaches kids more than anatomy

Ballsack, bollocksack, nutsack, bumper nuts, ballbag, beanbag, bawbag, fruit basket, scrot, scrote, escroto... the list goes on. If I were a trashy foul-mouthed scribe who took delight in peppering vulgarities and equally offensive non-American words throughout his ramblings, I'd be tempted to use one of the above terms.

Different coffee, distinct Movement

It happened yesterday, when I was finishing my morning coffee. Croatian coffee is cooked twice, resulting in thick and grainy syrup at the bottom of every cup. I'd gotten used to it after my third or fourth cup in Zagreb, but yesterday morning I realized how completely alien that last sip is to anything I'd ever drank back home.

'Rider' goes down in shameful flames

"Ghost Rider" is one of the worst films in recent history. It's difficult to know where to begin with this review, as "Ghost Rider" cannot be explained easily. The failure of this film cannot be ascribed to any single flaw, but rather a whole mess of them coming together into one giant cinematic fecal explosion.

Quirky pop outfit delights with sweet sounds

When Rob Schneider, the lead singer of the Apples in Stereo, joyfully sang, "The whole world is made of energy," at the Black Cat last Tuesday night, the crowd had no choice but to believe him. After all, the Apples were already halfway through its infectiously catchy set and were generating enough energy to power U Street for weeks.

Music notes

The Appleseed Cast "Peregrine" (Militia Group) Sounds like: A Jimmy Eat World, Radiohead, Death Cab for Cutie pool party, drinks all around. Grade: A- Emo. Few subgenres of rock appeal to such a broad range of musical palettes, from the saccharine melancholia of Dashboard Confessional to the throat shredding intensity of From Autumn to Ashes.

Study abroad, but step lightly on historic sites

When I was little, I knew what old was. My grandparents were ancient and my parents were pretty darn old. Once I entered elementary school, I learned all about U.S. history, and those founding fathers from the 18th century seemed incomprehensibly remote. How did humans even exist then? Did they talk like us? Did they breathe oxygen and like "The Boxcar Children" like me? Yesterday, I was confronted with one of the founding fathers' contemporaries, the minute general Napoleon.
