For those who haven't heard, Barbaro - the horse who fought adversity to win last year's Kentucky Derby and our hearts - died Monday. Barbaro's leg was broken, so his owners decided to put him down. The Scene staff, followers of the Barbaro story since that rainy day in a barn when he was conceived, was particularly delighted with The Washington Post's coverage on Tuesday.

Katzen honors violist Kivrak

Musician in Residence Osman Kivrak will celebrate his 20-year anniversary at AU this weekend with a performance Friday night at the Katzen Arts Center. The idea for the concert came from his colleague, Nancy Jo Sneider, the Music Programs Director in the Department of Performing Arts, who describes Kivrak as "one of the most creative artists I have ever met.

'Tempest' stirs up laughter

The Church Street Theatre's latest production, "The Tempest," is considered to be one of William Shakespeare's greatest works and most humorous comedies. Director Timothy Shaw combines all of the play's greatest assets - romance, betrayal, magic and drunken comedy - to produce a show that is sure to impress theatergoers throughout the District.

Fugazi bassist goes solo

In the small, intimate backstage area of the Black Cat, it's hard to escape Joe Lally's steady gaze, especially as one of only 40 people that braved the icy streets on Monday night to see what he's been up to since Fugazi went on indefinite "hiatus." Despite the night's relatively poor turnout, Lally's October 2006 solo effort, "There to Here," is earning him much-deserved respect and attention, though he is still better known as Fugazi's bassist.

Picture-perfect Obscura rocks 9:30 club

When the amp connection broke at the start of Camera Obscura's third song at the 9:30 club on Monday, lead singer Tracyanne Campbell assured the audience all was well. "It is not a true Camera Obscura concert until something fucks up," she said, and shortly afterward Campbell and the rest of the band compensated for the minor mishap with a superb performance.

MFA candidate stages 'Masterpiece'

Last weekend, MFA candidate Patrick Flynn staged a play with an especially poignant message for seniors scheduled to graduate in May: Don't take your life or yourself too seriously at age 22. Titled "Untitled Masterpiece," the 45-minute play was commissioned and originally produced by Contemporary Stage Company last summer.

When I first began writing this column, a few people commented I was like Dan Savage, the nationally renowned sex columnist. At the time, I had no idea whom they were talking about. Top 10 of 2006

Overall, the movie industry's total box office receipts were up as compared to 2005, and Jack Sparrow and the cast of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" were partly to thank. There were some real winners at the box office this year, and then, as usual, some real losers.
