"The 9 Parts of Desire" Arena Stage 1101 6th St. N.W. Through Nov. 12 Grade: A- When actress and playwright Heather Raffo descended to the basement of the Saddam Art Center in Baghdad in 1993, she found a solitary picture of a woman, naked and clinging to a bare tree with her head bowed.

Carbon Leaf "Love, Loss, Hope, Repeat" (Vanguard) Sounds like: Irish-infused electric/acoustic that's as much folk/roots as it is pop/rock. Grade: B "Love, Loss, Hope, Repeat" marks Carbon Leaf's seventh album, and one has to wonder whether they've run out of things to say.

Acting beyond campus: Anne Veal takes a bow

"Short Order Stories" Directed by Joe Calarco Charter Theatre 3700 S. Four Mile Run Arlington, Va. (202) 333-7009 Running through Oct. 21 Grade: B- It's a rough night at the theater when "NOTHING!", "NEVERMIND!" and the granddaddy of four-letter words are the most popular words in the script.

AU senior makes professional debut in 'Short Order Stories'

Four nights a week Anne Veal drives to Arlington, slathers her eyes in black makeup, pulls a black hoodie over her head so it shades her face and sulks, motionless, in a diner chair for half an hour. Veal, a senior theater major in the College of Arts and Sciences, is playing a girl about to start her freshman year of college in Charter Theatre's "Short Order Stories.

New 'Massacre' heavy on gore, light on plot

In the opening scene of the B-movie horror classic "Re-Animator," mad scientist Herbert West reanimates the corpse of his mentor with disastrous side effects. The lumbering corpse is just a zombie, nothing like the person that it used to be. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" has the same problem.

District's Exit Clov 'responds' with new album

What happens when you mix the indie-pop harmonies of identical twin sisters with a tight rhythm section and a layered guitar? You get D.C.'s very own Exit Clov. "Respond Respond," the bands' second EP, proves Exit Clov's eclectic abilities as it leaves the listener unable to pinpoint one particular style.

Marvel, DC release new classic titles

"Justice League of America" Best-selling author Brad Meltzer did something that hadn't been done before last month. He simultaneously topped the best-seller list with new thriller "The Book of Fate" and the comic book charts with the first issue of "Justice League of America," published by DC Comics.


Helen Mirren tackles the role of Queen Elizabeth with grace and stunning accuracy in Stephen Frear's docu-drama, "The Queen."

Di's death through Queen's eyes

Stephen Frears' new film about the royal family is many things, but most of all it is fittingly majestic. "The Queen" focuses on the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, shown through the experiences of Queen Elizabeth (Helen Mirren) and a wavering, newly-elected Prime Minister Tony Blair, and whether the beloved princess should have a public or private display of grief with the trials of a modernizing government.

"Rain: The Beatles Experience" Grade: A Beatlemania is sweeping the nation once again. "Rain: The Beatles Experience" played the first of three weekend shows on Friday for a packed crowd at the Warner Theatre. As covered in a previous issue of The Eagle, Rain is the preeminent Beatles tribute band in the United States.

Three concerts captivate crowds

UMPHREY'S McGEE As six-piece jam band Umphrey's McGee took the stage at the 9:30 club last Thursday night, the crowd took a deep breath in and didn't exhale all night. The entranced crowd began to sway and dance as the band played the first notes of "Intentions Clear," a song off their newest album "Safety in Numbers," released in April of this year.

The right cast can turn a good script into a great movie. Martin Scorsese's new film "The Departed" started with a cool premise, but knockout performances by its veteran actors make the film a must-see. "The Departed" transplants the plot of a Hong Kong hit called "Internal Affairs" onto the streets of Boston.

AU Players confront tragedy

The AU Players' latest production of the post-9/11 play "The Sleeper" confronts the aftermath of the tragedy and explores the social impact it had on people now living in a changed world. When Bill, played by Roddy Flynn, a junior in the School of Public Affairs, confronts his wife about living her life as if she's in a cocoon, he doesn't realize that every character in "The Sleeper" lives in the same cocoon, whether it be one of ignorance, naivet?, selfishness or emotional blindness.

D.C. Fashion Week shows local talent

As the world's top designers displayed their spring collections for the past few weeks in Paris, Milan, London and New York, lesser-known names had their own moments in the spotlight during D.C. Fashion Week. The fifth installment of this biannual event culminated in the International Collections Haute Couture Show at the Embassy of France last Sunday evening.

In the play, Do¤a Leonor (Gabriela Fernandez-Coffey) has the courage to cross-dress to take revenge on Don Juan (Mel Rocher).
