Birdgang, Skrilla's hip-hop picks

·

Hip-hop music was born almost 30 years ago on the streets of the Bronx in New York City. In its earliest form, hip-hop was nothing more than a DJ, an MC (master of ceremonies), two turntables and some bass-heavy break-beats blasting out of a set of speakers.

Garrett's Vintage Shopping Tips

·

Ask for what it is you have in mind. Vintage stores can often be overwhelming, and the sales attendants may be able to find something for you more easily than you would be able to do on your own. Give yourself time. When you finally find that perfect green paisley skirt you've always wanted, it will be well worth the five hours you spent hunting for it.

Nomination domination

JEFFREY MIDDENTS Film studies professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Best Actor: Phillip Seymour Hoffman, "Capote" Should win: Heath Ledger, who makes everyone forget about the fact that he has acting in dreck for years. Will win: Hoffman, because he's a fine character actor who has been consistently giving great performances for a long time, and because he disappears and becomes Truman Capote, who doesn't look a thing like him.

Thoughts on Oscar mania

This Sunday night is Oscar night, where the question of which film is the best picture of the year will finally be decided and Jon Stewart will go down in history as the best Academy Awards host of all time. It's also the night that will determine which films, actors and directors will be most marketable in the film industry.

'Vagina Monologues' boldly expose taboo topics

Eve Ensler could not have realized the effect of her work when she debuted the "Vagina Monologues" in New York in the mid-90s. Not only does this controversial yet popular play persistent in its message, but it has spawned a worldwide movement known as V-Day, which raises awareness about violence against women and girls.

NOFX performs with admirable energy, racy humor

For being 39 years old, lead singer Fat Mike and the rest of NOFX still know how to put on a great punk show. Monday night at Nation, NOFX rolled into town and slammed out some of their most classic tunes, as well as some of their newer political songs. It's rare for NOFX to be caught here on the east coast, and for the thousand or so fans who made it to the club, no one left empty handed.

D.C. gets watered down with drips

District residents and suburban castaways, rejoice: it appears that Washington has finally arrived. Bust out those debutante gowns; this is the grand coming out party. After years of wallowing in obscurity and square-ness, D.C. has hit the big time. And to who do us simple, bucolic metropolitanites owe thanks for such an honor? American Apparel.

AU students offer insights, perspectives on Cuba

This semester, 10 AU students packed their bags for a land forbidden to most American travelers: Cuba. Ex-patriots? Not quite. They are the first-ever participants in AU Abroad's Cuba enclave program, just initiated this spring. "This is a very unusual and significant opportunity because the U.

Horoscopes

Aries (March 21 - April 19) Think back to a time when you were wearing your favorite clogs. If you braid your hair and eat some cake, you will be able to find the windmill that has been eluding you. Travel over the hill and beyond the river, past the bridge where the troll will grant you your greatest wish.

Sex life is a balancing act

This is what my semester looks like: five classes that start at 8:30 a.m. two days a week, an internship at 9 a.m. another two days, and a part time job that keeps me out late and up early on Saturdays, in addition to a steady social life (a.k.a. four nights of heavy drinking a week).

Flogging Molly find family in their fans at 9:30 club

The shroud of an Ennio Morricone spaghetti western score as a prelude should have been the first hint that Tuesday night would be a different sort of Flogging Molly concert. The Irish folk/rock sextet were launching into the first of a two-night stand at the 9:30 club, reestablishing their work ethic outside of tours geared toward album promotion.

Legendary musician showcased in new movie

Neil Young is kind of unreliable. His discography is littered with failures and confusing experiments, including an industrial album, 1983's "Trans." Young's music career, now in its fifth decade, has seen itself a lonely singer-songwriter, a rowdy fellow with an electric guitar and even a brief stint in rockabilly.

Spring 2006

Spring break is idealized by MTV as the pinnacle of the college school year. A bunch of drunken post-adolescents fly to Cancun or some other remotely tropical locale, get half-naked and rub up against each other, all the while reveling in their meaningless consumer-driven lives.

From Mud Box to Megabytes, AU divided over coffee consumption

"Sorry, I was half asleep" shouldn't be an acceptable excuse for missing class at AU, considering that students can't swing a cat on campus without hitting somewhere to buy a cup o' joe. AU's main campus, which stretches roughly three-tenths of a mile, houses eight places to get your fix, not to mention the proximity of two Starbucks locations (four-tenths of a mile away to New Mexico Avenue and one mile away to Tenleytown).

The hit list

1. Google Chat Even though it's virtually impossible to tell when someone is messaging you via Google Chat when you've just got Gmail hanging out somewhere in the background, it's still pretty awesome that Google put this contraption out. Not only is it another reason for your grandmother to feel computer illiterate, but it also lets you accuse your friends whom Gmail didn't arbitrarily bless with the chat function feel like a freaking luddite.

Prefuse 73 "Security Screenings" (Warp) Sounds like: A more disorganized take from the superior IDMgenius, Scott Herren. B Scott Herren has been spreading the wealth of his talent and intellect for years now. Between Prefuse 73, Delarosa & Asora and Savath + Savalas, Herren and his multitude of aliases are the face of "intelligent dance music" (a ridiculous genre title, to be sure) and the man has perfected the art of infusing gritty, organic sensations into his array of beat sequences and samples.

New Comedy Central roast DVD less exciting than in past

The concept of a celebrity roast is a noble one. The idea of an established figure in the entertainment industry being showered with adoring insults from his/her longtime friends and colleagues is meant to serve as tribute to someone who's had a major impact on them and the public.

'Freedomland' not as thrilling as previews promised

If there were ever a prime example of a trailer misleading the viewer-other than "Spanglish"-"Freedomland" would be it. The trailer makes the movie out to be a crazy thriller, only briefly mentioning the race issues that underscore the film. And the part about the insane asylum? Only a very minimal part of the plot.
