Out of context

"I always thought Paul McCartney looked like a mouse." -Neal Pattison, SOC professor Like a deer in the headlights, a young woman stepping off the AU shuttle near the Katzen Arts Center froze when she saw, well, a deer idling on the lawn. Then, like a deer in most non-headlight situations, the AU student ran away.

Furry Animals snuggle up to 9:30

Oh, the Super Furry Animals. It's difficult to describe the music of a band with a penchant for five-part songs and futuristic cartoon creatures. A sizable crowd shuffled into D.C.'s 9:30 Club Tuesday night, hoping that seeing these eccentric Welsh rockers live would clear up the confusion.

Triangles of love aren't always right

In kindergarten, we were taught that sharing is caring. Having this cemented in my consciousness since my first year at St. Thomas Catholic Elementary, I've always been more than willing to share with my friends. Notes, clothes, alcohol and even money is willingly lent to my close friends.

Mature 'Atmosphere' surrounds new disc

The release of a "mature" album by an artist usually signals the end of the purity, effervescence and spontaneity that made previous albums successful. Such albums are usually marked by a self-conscious urge to weigh in on important issues not particularly well served by a 50 to 70 minute running time.

Gershwin opera ends the season on a high note

With the coming of November, the leaves began falling and the air started cooling, but Monday night it was "Summertime" at the Kennedy Center, as the Washington National Opera performed Gershwin's American classic, "Porgy and Bess." Directed by Francesca Zambello, the performance featured strong lead characters, interesting set design and a story that connected with the American crowd in a way that classic opera from Verdi or Puccini could not.

Documentary doesn't follow 'Protocol'

Sometimes even intellectually stimulating subject matter can't help a bad documentary. "Protocols of Zion," a movie by Mark Levin about anti-Semitism after September 11, lacks the focus and objectivism it needs to make it a good film, although Levin presents a great deal of interesting information in the movie.

Sky, standards fall in Disney's latest

This movie is fantastic! This movie is fantastic! Oh wait: no it isn't. It's just another screw-up from Walt Disney Pictures. How Disney ever thought it could put together a solid CG film without Pixar is unfathomable. This picture's release was pushed back a couple of times over the past year or so, and with good reason.
