From college students to D.C. natives, everyone seems to have their own personal escape hatch for avoiding the tourist crowd while living in the city. Typically inexpensive and off the beaten path, the urban oases of D.C. dwellers reflect a sense of appreciation for the "real D.

'Jewel of the Mall' strikes gold

·

A soaring bald eagle is a pretty impressive image as it is, but replace that eagle with a giant one made of bronze, and you've got one hell of a picture. At least, that's what Stephen R. Brown, former AU professor and author of "The Jewel of the Mall," thought.

Kung Fu Hustle A- with Stephen Chow, Qiu Yuen, Kwok Kuen Chan. Written and directed by Stephen Chow. Opens tomorrow. Chow's humor harkens back to the vaudeville rule of threes (in Chow's case, it's more like a rule of sevens). He combines slapstick, double meanings and non-stop tomfoolery with elaborate action sequences that can best be described as awe-inspiring and glorious.

New 'Doom' installment lacks in story, delivers in death

"Doom 3," id Software's latest installment of their first-person shooter series, pulls no punches ... almost. Originally released for PC last summer, the new Xbox version looks fantastic. All over-exaggeration aside, "Doom 3" looks as if it were painted by Michelangelo with a brush crafted by a demon.

The Hit List

1. Jelly Pizza in TDR Presumably the most disgusting thing in the world, TDR offered up an innovative approach to that stone pie we all know and love. Jelly. And cheese. Aptly described as "oddly delicious," jelly pizza was some intoxicated TDR worker's brainchild.

With warmth comes new fashion hassles

Spring is finally here, and in D.C. that's something to talk about. But we'd best enjoy it while we can, because only a few more weeks remain until these idyllic, breezy days turn into a swampy, muggy nightmare. I love summer as much as the next girl, but surviving it in style is a perpetual challenge.

Ex AV nerd tears up 9:30

A funny thing happened on the way to the 21st century. In the midst of America's love affair with prepackaged music, from Lou Bega's boppy "Mambo No. 5" to the Backstreet Boys' opus "I Want it That Way," there was a primal scream let out by one of the last original club kids.

Ramblings of a real-life record store clerk

As a clerk at Crooked Beats, a record store in Adams Morgan, I know what it's like to live that "High Fidelity" lifestyle. In reality, I find myself making so many snide comments about bands I dislike, and the music I can't buy, that I feel compelled to say something positive.

Take a trip to the Emerald Isle at Bethesda's Ri Ra

St. Patty's Day may be a blurry, distant memory, mostly of unidentifiable green beverages in plastic Solo cups over a dingy barroom floor. But that doesn't mean festive souls don't crave a frothy Guinness or flavorful Shepard's Pie every now and then. Although impoverished college students are more likely to get sidetracked by the Baja Fresh across the street, more culturally inclined cuisine seekers will benefit from an evening cloistered within Bethesda's Ri Ra, one of seven in a chain of Irish restaurants dotting the nation from Raleigh, N.
