Students compete in one classy concerto

·

The handful of people who attended Saturday's concerto and aria competition in Kay Spiritual Life Center learned just how much talent hides in AU's Kreeger music building. Violinist Alyson Slack won the competition and the opportunity to play with the AU symphony orchestra in its spring concert with her phenomenal performance of Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor.

Movie Review: 'Wedding Date' a mess for Messing

In "The Wedding Date," directed by Clare Kilner ("How to Deal"), Debra Messing ("Will & Grace") plays Kat Ellis, a single New Yorker going to London for her younger sister's wedding. Kat hires professional male escort Nick Mercer, played by Dermot Mulroney from "My Best Friend's Wedding," to be her date, mostly because the best man at the wedding is Kat's ex-fianc?, Jeffrey, who dumped her two years earlier.

Sex columnist status scares 'em off

Being a sex columnist is ruining my sex life! Yes, it's sad but true. Most men out there in the abyss I call "the black hole of dating" want a virgin in the bar and a beast in the bedroom. But where does a woman that spends her days writing about sex, between her look of innocence and her foul-mouth, fall in this virgin-slut dichotomy?

Missed chances lose game for Men's Basketball

AU Men's Basketball didn't look anything like the team the Crusaders whacked 24 points two weeks ago in Sunday's home rematch with the Crusaders. But for all their improvements, failures to convert opportunities put the Eagles back in overtime, 76-67. The loss followed Friday night's 86-58 win over Army (3-18, 1-8 PL) in which junior Andre Ingram scored 23 points and shot 5-of-7 from three-point range and the Eagles held a 2-to-1 rebounding advantage.

'90s Flashback

If a recent party hosted by AU students says anything, the '90s are definitely making a comeback. Guests sucked on Jolly Ranchers and nursed wine coolers while listening to the hottest tracks by Lou Bega and the Offspring. Several students snacked on Dunkaroos and stood in deep thought over a shrine dedicated to Kurt Cobain.

'90s cringe-worthy clothes

Coming of age in the '90s was exciting. I was livin' large with Hammer, "A Different World," the Macarena, "Scream," and my man, Tickle Me Elmo. However, there's one thing about this decade that still gives me the chills - my horrible, horrible clothes. The first half of the '90s were particularly heinous, mainly because I was still in elementary school and my mother helped dress me each day.

'Brave' new band plays hot set

The Bravery defined sex, glam, and sweat in Baltimore Friday night, playing their painfully short 45-minute set to a swooning crowd at Baltimore's Fletchers bar. The band has a recently built reputation to uphold, with "Band to Watch in 2005" splayed over every performance and mention of their name.

'Tattooed Girl' scarred by poor direction

The first thing audience members notice at the start of "Tattooed Girl," the world premiere of the Joyce Carol Oates novel at Theatre J, is the set. The artful set and the brilliant lighting are by far the show's standout aspect, but the art direction sets up an expectation that the script and direction could not meet.

'Hide,' don't 'seek' out this film

When it comes to suspense movies, "Hide and Seek" falls short of expectations in terms of shock value. Despite some surprises, the movie is slow and directionless, contrary to the perception that it's a supernatural thriller. Robert DeNiro plays New York psychologist David Callaway.

Arena's 'Sax' uncovers liberated sex

Sophie Treadwell's "Intimations for Saxophone" debuted at Arena Stage on Thursday, as part of the theater's lost-and-found series in which it produces the forgotten plays of American writers. Treadwell, who wrote the play in her thirties, was a unique figure in American Expressionism because she was a woman, and the experimental movement was typically dominated by male playwrights and protagonists.

This 'flute' can't hit the right note

"The Magic Flute" is one of the most loved operas of all time. It is important to be clear about that fact, because one would not know this after seeing it performed at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. The fact that the set looks as though it was drawn by a 5-year-old child is the first clue that something about this show has gone horribly awry.
