Diary of an Intern: Don't stop drinking about tomorrow

·

If there has ever been a day to get smashed at work, then Wednesday was the day. I know plenty of interns who sat at their desks, staring blankly at CNN.com and resisting the urge to collapse on their keyboards in blubbering heaps. Wouldn't that have been a perfect time to co-opt a temporary bout of alcoholism? I'm telling you: All the smart interns were drinking straight-up vodka from a Nalgene bottle while making flight reservations to Toronto on Priceline.com.

Femme-fronted punks return

·

Because punk rock only boasts a handful of female singers, there is little space for comparison when discussing their music. Resemblances are inevitably drawn between whichever contemporary female rocker you are discussing and "old school" punkers like Siouxsie Sioux (of Siouxsie and the Banshees) and Debbie Harry. Aimee Echo, theSTART's growling lead singer, provokes comparisons to Sioux left and right. Scarcely can a review of "Initiation," the band's second album, following 2001's "Shakedown!" be seen that doesn't contain a roaring comparison between Echo's and Sioux's unique vocal styles.

Last-ditch effort to make Michigan see red

On Friday morning, I awoke at the insanely early hour of 5 a.m to meet my fellow College Republicans by the North Side shuttle stop at 6 a.m. We had been deployed by the RNC 72-Hour Task Force to Jackson, Mich. to campaign for President Bush. We drove to Reagan National Airport, caught our flight, and before we knew what was happening, we landed in Lansing.

Smart 'Incredibles' joins forces with Pixar's best

If Pixar values a good story, then "The Incredibles" makes sense. As the years go by, films come and go, but no group of filmmakers in the past nine years - since the release of "Toy Story" in 1995 - has produced such consistently excellent films. From the "Toy Story" movies, to the "Seven Samurai"-inspired plot of "A Bug's Life," to stories of monsters and fish, Pixar has been a mainstay in quality filmmaking.

Log Cabin Republicans director fights for gay rights

There is a reason why Christopher Barron, political director of the Log Cabin Republicans, failed to receive the distinction of "Most Friendly" in high school... The award went to someone else, and when asked by a friend for his opinion of that student, Barron replied pithily: "I hate him." Somehow, Barron also failed to receive the "Most Opinionated" award.

Video Games: Donkey Konga

In a wide selection of novelty games, "Donkey Konga" stands out as one that will not leave players bored within the first day - and that's saying a lot, considering the lack of staying power of most games within this genre. "Donkey Konga" is essentially "Dance Dance Revolution" with bongos.

Candidates 'face' off

Is it me, or is this election like that one episode of "The Simpsons"? You know the one, where aliens Kang and Kodos capture the 1996 candidates, Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, and switch places with them. Then, when it's revealed to the voting electorate that it has to choose between the two evil aliens, someone suggests voting for a third-party candidate. "Go ahead, throw your vote away," the aliens say, laughing. D'oh!
