Diary of an Intern: Necktie optional

·

As I pretend to write this column, one roommate is having sex in her bedroom and the other is casually funneling a can of Natural Ice in the kitchen. I, of course, am watching "Law and Order" and revamping my profile on TheFaceBook.com. Procrastination is a cruel, intoxicating mistress.

"Going Upriver" with Kerry

·

In this allegedly very important election year, there's a lot of so-called entertainment being released with underlying meanings. Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" led the pack of anti-Bush films that includes "Outfoxed" and "Silver City," as well as a number of lesser known quasi-documentaries shown in indie theaters and released on DVD for sale on the Internet.

Flogging Molly foams with a fervor

For a brief moment, as Flogging Molly prepared to step onto the stage of the 9:30 club on Monday, panic ensued in the crowd. Ringing out over the speakers was Flogging Molly's acoustic cover of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." The presence of possibly the most-covered song in punk history stoked the fears of the crowd.

American Indian exhibits disappoint

If there is one word that can be used to describe the new American Indian Museum it is incomplete. While excited crowds and a nearby festival mark the exterior of the building, the interior of the building does not live up to expectations.

The Rusty Nail: Word games

The fine folks of Whole Foods Market have taken the euphemism ladder up another notch. They call me a "team member." I think this would be a lot more fun if I were allowed to call my bosses "Coach," but they tend to frown on that.

Silver City: D-

Unlike "Fahrenheit 9/11" and subsequent documentaries, "Silver City" in no way attempts to mask itself as being a source of information that was not readily available to the public. Instead, it uses its star-studded cast to poke fun at the president in a manner less obvious than "Saturday Night Live," yet less interesting than a bag of flour.

The full story on Kramerbooks

One might describe Kramerbooks as a Washington institution, the perfect combination of a bookstore and restaurant, or an excellent place to find books that appeal to one's intellect. But for Pete Conner, a manager of the store's Afterwords Caf?, it's a bit simpler than that. "This place is strange," he says. "It's really strange."

Furnaces shred at the Black Cat

On paper, the Fiery Furnaces and Inouk seem like an ideal pairing. Both play blues-based roots rock, and both have an indiscernible laundry list of influences. But on Friday night at the Black Cat, White Magic's brand of barefoot tribal folk got the award for most head-scratching set of the night.
