Jack Johnson at the Merriweather

·

The torrential rains on Friday night did not keep Jack Johnson fans from the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md. In fact, thousands of fans packed the lawn section to slide around in a giant mudbath to the music of Donavan Frankenreiter, G. Love and Special Sauce, and Jack Johnson.

Tsunami Bomb makes waves

·

In an industry where so many bands just want to make it to the top and get rich quick, Tsunami Bomb is the odd band out. Even with a large fan base and decent sales on their last album, "The Ultimate Escape," the band feels out of place in the ruthless music industry where record label execs' eyes reflect dollar signs, not music notes.

The story of the Ramones hits theaters

The recently released film "End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones" succeeds in portraying an honest account of the band without getting too carried away with lessons learned or rock 'n' roll revolution. The Ramones weren't that complicated. If anything, the Ramones made it cool to be geeks.

The Rusty Nail: Panda-mania

I never understood Washington, D.C.'s infatuation with the pandas. I hate pandas. I feel like they are the Dave Matthews Band of the animal world. They're wildly popular without any substance to back it up.

Paris Texas fits, saves the bill

The booker at the Black Cat should be thanking their lucky stars that Paris Texas was on the bill Thursday night. Sandwiched between two of the world's most boring live bands, Paris Texas presented an energetic live set that probably saved many audience members from running to the box office for refunds at the night's end.

Caught with your pants down: 'Manizing'

Whether it's your first or fourth year at American University, you may have realized that on such a small campus with a seemingly limited selection of available (and desirable) hook-ups, a handful of people always have that smile saying, "Oh yeah. Last night was ... amazing."

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow: B+

What do Mustang fighter planes, giant robots and pre-Apple Gwyneth have in common? They are all in "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," of course. With a retro style that feels fresh, "Sky Captain" gives audiences a fun ride that can be best described as a cross between "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones."

Wimbledon: A-

"Wimbledon" is a categorical romantic comedy, but surprisingly finds its strengths in character portrayal and development. Unlike many other romantic comedies, "Wimbledon" manages to tell the story from the male perspective.

Guided by Voices finally 'motor away'

The final album of the vastly inconsistent yet totally brilliant band Guided by Voices is a shuddering testament to their casual decline. Guided by Voices, as the veritable lo-fi monolith that they are, has spanned more than two decades, with 15 albums, a large array of EPs and singles and a rabid, beer-soaked, collegiate fan base to show for it.
