Film: 'The Ladykillers'

·

"The Ladykillers" is a stylishly modern remake of the 1955 film of the same name about an attempt to rob a casino by digging through an old Southern churchgoing woman's basement. The theme is signature subject matter for the writer-director team the Coen brothers, who have crafted several dark comedies including "Fargo" and "The Big Lebowski."

Backstage drama in 'Kiss Me, Kate'

Directed and choreographed by AU professor of theatre Karl Kippola, "Kiss Me, Kate" presents hot musical numbers, flashy chorus girls, gangsters and tender romantic moments quintessential to its 1948 Baltimore setting. The story, a play within a play, follows the on-and-off stage relationship of a divorced couple, Fred Graham and Lilli Vanessi, as they star together in Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew."

Brand names: The quest for a status symbol

In 2000, logomania set its sights on the world of fashion once again. The trend of displaying designer logos on one's clothing, shoes and handbags has surged since, reaching a new all-time high. Not since the 1980s has there been such a logo-obsessed society that seems not to mind being walking billboards.

The Offspring: Aging punks offer tired LP

The Offspring used to be categorized along with bands like Green Day and blink-182 as one of the original pop punk bands and it still is in some sense. Its new album begs to differ. "Hit That," the first single off the Offspring's latest contribution to the music world, sounds like a joke on first listen. Luckily the rest of the 12 songs off this CD are significantly better than "Hit That," although that's not really saying much.

When in Rome: Mourning a loss back home

Being the eternal worrier that I am, I had some fears before I left to go abroad. What if something terrible happened back in the United States? Would I be able to come home, or would I have to deal with the situation from thousands of miles away? Until several days ago, I handled my worries fairly well.

Film: 'Good bye, Lenin!'

With an interesting concept and careful detail, "Good bye, Lenin!" takes on the daunting task of telling and showing a story before, during and after the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany. The film is best described as a dramedy, mixing both dramatic and comedic elements well, but at times it feels uneven, with the dramatic parts coming at the expense of the laughs.

Film: Four stars for 'Eternal Sunshine'

Human beings may feign a desire for freedom and independence, but central to our minds and actions is the need for human contact. Relationships drive our existence and it seems that everything we create is a response to the question of why we crave this connection with another person so badly.

Film: 'Dawn of the Dead'

"Dawn of the Dead" is a remake of the classic 1978 horror film of the same name, in which zombies begin to slowly take over the planet. At first, the film seems to be a pretty good movie; however, once it sinks in, it becomes clear that it is inherently different from other horror films. Overall, this movie is nothing special.

Laguardia meets Death

"Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them" is an apt title, not only for Murder By Death's sophomore record, but also for its live set. Last Thursday night's show at the Black Cat was opened by Laguardia, a Philadelphia band that cuts chops similar in sound to Radiohead's "The Bends.
