Film review: 'Hanna'

“Hanna” opens with a shot of a snowy landscape — cold, distant and elegant, much like the movie itself. A stylized kiddy version of “The Bourne Identity,” “Hanna” does an excellent job of showcasing balletic fight scenes and starkly contrasting cinematography, but fails to draw the audience’s sympathy to the protagonist’s struggles.

Film review: 'Your Highness'

·

Taking a movie like the “Lord of the Rings,” inserting a plethora of raunchy sex jokes, f-bombs and snippets of soft-core porn and then smoking a bowl may sound like a hilarious way to kill an afternoon. Yet “Your Highness” takes this premise and somehow manages to turn it into a barely funny film that even its talented cast can’t redeem.

Folksy crooner Livingston Taylor to perform at the Birchmere in VA

·

The Birchmere will be graced with Livingston Taylor, an artist who is sadly not very well-known for anything other than that one time he hit number 30 on the charts with “I Will Be in Love with You,” this coming Thursday. Some people will look at him and just see the great James Taylor’s brother, and, while they share the same North Carolina twang and stand with a similar stature, Livingston’s talent is not one to be overlooked.

WANTED — Actors have often taken to playing historical figures, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Brad Pitt’s portrayal of the infamous Jesse James was one that worked.

Actors get schooled in history through roles

In keeping with a noble tradition of bringing you lists based on rumors and conjecture within the entertainment industry, here’s a fun one: crazy-young-man-turned-sad-old-man Bill Murray may be playing Franklin Delano Roosevelt. I will let that sink in. The guy whose arguably best role involved a longstanding feud with a gopher will play one of the most important figures in 20th century history.

LOVE AND MARRIAGE — The Shakespeare Theater Company has opened their latest endeavor, the Victorian-era, Oscar Wilde comedy ‘An Ideal Husband.’ It runs until April 16.

Shakespeare Theater Company puts on an ‘ideal’ performance

“Life, Joy, Empire and Victory.” These were the words displayed on the curtain and stage of the Shakespeare Theater Company’s March 2011 production of the Oscar Wilde comedy “An Ideal Husband.” Taken from Mary Shelley’s play “Prometheus Unbound,” the mantra provided an ironic backdrop for a production laced with Victorian-era political corruption.

Charlyne Yi brings stoner humor to Arlington Drafthouse

Stoner humor is an odd approach to making people laugh. Random giggling, neurotic behavior; all in all, it can be embarrassing to watch. Some people have found success digging into this genre, like Seth Rogen. Women, however have a difficult time developing good ‘stoner’ acts. This was not the problem Charlyne Yi had when she performed at the Arlington Cinema & Draft House last Friday.
