Home sweet home for Nationals

The summer of 2008 is shaping up to be the season when the Washington Nationals shake their identity crisis forever. Come April, the club will christen a first-class new stadium, replacing the depressing architectural relic that is RFK. But also, and maybe even more importantly, the Nats will not have to contend with the off-field distractions that have come to define the team during their infancy in the District.

Only 11 Eagle baskets made for win

It's not often that you win a basketball game when you make less than 30 percent of your shots, but the men's basketball team did just that, defeating conference rival Army and sweeping the season series 49-40 last night at Bender Arena. Sloppiness dictated play from the start as both teams combined to turn the ball over on the first three possessions of the game before junior Bryce Simon knocked down a three-point shot to give the Eagles the early lead.

Second straight loss for lacrosse: Fall to Drexel Dragons, 8-6

Playing with the same ferocity as the snow that was falling throughout the game, the women's lacrosse team stayed strong in their home opener but their effort was not enough to prevent the Eagles from losing 8-6 to the Drexel Dragons. The game started slow for AU, as Drexel jumped out to an early two-point lead by scoring goals only 45 seconds apart at the 22:29 mark.

Women's b-ball gains 7th straight win: No. 1 in PL

The women's basketball team came out strong from the start in their game at Army, winning 63-51 on Wednesday night and putting the team in first place in the Patriot League. With no more than 13 seconds into the game, AU put its name on the scoreboard, gaining a two-point lay-up from senior Maggie Smith-Davidson.

Men's basketball rallies past Colgate, wins 68-60

The men's basketball team was forced to come from behind on Sunday afternoon, rallying from nine points down at the half to defeat Colgate 68-60 in Hamilton, N.Y. The game started out on a positive note for the Eagles, who took a 21-15 lead on a three-pointer by junior Brian Gilmore at the 9:39 mark of the first half after trading baskets back and forth with the Raiders during the opening minutes.

Women's lacrosse falls to Ohio State in season opener

The women's lacrosse team lost 14-3 in Saturday's season opener in Columbus, Ohio, against perennial powerhouse Ohio State University. The game started off close, with a 1-1 tie going into the 10th minute. However, after an 8-0 Buckeye run finishing off the first half, the Eagles struggled to find their footing.

Wrestling team takes individual victories, team defeat

Individually, the men's wrestling team continued to receive impressive performances. However, the team struggled to produce positive results as a team Sunday when they dropped their last Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association contest of the season, 30-14 at Bucknell.

Women's basketball takes first place in PL

The women's basketball team is now in a three-way tie for first place in the Patriot League after defeating Colgate 73-46 in Bender Arena Saturday. AU took advantage of the court from the start, gaining control of the ball right at tip-off. The Eagles scored the first few baskets of the game, nailing 10 of their first 15 shots.

Women's basketball soars over buckled-down Bison

The women's basketball team broke a record last night in Lewisburg, Pa., when they beat the Bucknell Bison 50-46 to mark their fifth straight win of the season, a first-ever occurrence for the Eagles since joining the Patriot League. Guards Liz Hayes and Pam Stanfield racked in the points for their team as AU started the game off strong, entering the first half with an 11-3 run.

After last night's wire-to-wire 68-64 win over Bucknell at Bender Arena, the men's basketball team found they are now on a four game winning streak, something they had not accomplished all year. Junior Bryce Simon got the Eagles' offense going from the start with two early three-point shots.

The wrestling team Sunday came up short against Rutgers New Jersey, losing 28-13 against their conference rivals. Forfeits were a major factor in the defeat for AU, which was without some of their top wrestlers such as defending national champion Josh Glenn.

Lear leads women's basketball to road victory over Lehigh

Freshman Liz Lear's career-high 16 points helped lead the women's basketball team to its fourth straight victory on the road Saturday, defeating the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 62-49. Lear's eight consecutive points in the opening minutes, combined with back-to-back three-pointers by fellow freshman Michelle Kirk and senior Talicia Jackson, gave AU a commanding 22-5 lead throughout the game's first 10 minutes.

Men's basketball shines with cameras rolling

The Eagles got a huge lift from an unexpected source Sunday when junior Brian Gilmore came off the bench to score a career-high 26 points to lead the Eagles to an 82-74 win over Lehigh at Bender Arena. The Eagles fell behind early and quickly found themselves in an 11-4 hole as the Mountain Hawks converted on seemingly every possession in the first five minutes of the game.

Track seniors run strong in warm-up before PL champs

Senior Steve Hallinan captured the men's mile crown while fellow seniors Cathleen Ford and Kate Lilley had personal-best times at the same distance as the men's and women's track teams competed at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational over the weekend in New York City.

Eagles soar in second half

Four days after taking down first-place Lafayette, the men's basketball team rode a strong second half to beat the Holy Cross Crusaders 62-46 last night in Worcester, Mass. The Eagles were up to a tough challenge heading into the game. In the first meeting of the season, Crusader center Tim Clifford proved to be too tough for the smaller AU defenders to handle down the stretch en route to a game-high 24 points.
