FANS IN THE STANDS - Showing their dedication to and pride in AU athletics, Eagle fans get decked out in blue to cheer on men's soccer. Phil Reeves, an event where AU fans can come out and show their school spirit, took place Saturday.

The stands were buzzing on both sides of the field as the men's soccer team took on Army Saturday for the Patriot League opener. The Eagles conquered their opponent's noteworthy defense for a 2-1 win. For much of the early half of the game, both teams were locked in back-and-forth play.

Contrary to what many Americans may think, British pubs and American bars are very different. To the average American, it seems as though pubs and bars have the same function - places people go to drink and then stumble home. However, pubs in London are much more than just a place to go for Friday night's happy hour.

Men's soccer loses 1-0 after unsuccessful attempts on goal

Despite multiple scoring attempts, the men's soccer team was unable to capture a win during the 1-0 game against William and Mary Tuesday. The Eagles came straight from a tough loss on Saturday to Virginia Commonwealth University. The intensity and quality of the team's performance didn't waiver as the Eagles outshot the Tribe with 11 total attempts compared to the nine taken by the players of William and Mary.

Women's soccer loses in double overtime

The women's soccer team lost to local rival George Washington University 1-0 in a gut wrenching, double overtime game. The Eagles dominated the game, but it was the Colonials' heroics in the fourth minute of the second overtime that left the Eagles with its second defeat in a row.

Cross country finishes 5th at Iona Meet of Champions

The men's cross country team traveled to the Bronx, N.Y., Saturday to compete in Iona College's Meet of Champions against 16 other colleges and universities. Among the participating schools were Brown, Navy and Harvard. With three runners finishing in the top 20, AU placed a strong fifth overall behind Iona, Brown, Penn State and Navy.

Women's soccer loses to JMU

The Lady Eagles traveled to Harrisonburg, Va., Friday night to face the James Madison University Dukes but did not bring home a win, losing 3-0. The game, played with 248 people in attendance at the JMU soccer complex, brought AU's record to 6-3. With just over 27 minutes into the game, JMU scored a goal.

Men's soccer loses to Rams despite outshooting opponents

The AU men's soccer team lost its home game against Virginia Commonwealth University 5-0 on Saturday following their 0-0 tie in double overtime with James Madison, on Wednesday. Six minutes into the game, the Virginia Commonwealth Rams started the scoring early with an assisted goal that landed in the back of the net to place the Rams over the Eagles on the scoreboard 1-0.

Farewell to RFK Stadium

The Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies in the final baseball game at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium. The stadium was packed - even the high, yellow nosebleed seats, normally left deserted by the sparse Nationals fans, were filled to the brim. Cheers echoed through the stadium, reminding people why baseball is America's national pastime.

Field hockey loses second straight game

The AU Eagles field hockey team lost for the second straight time in a heartbreaking match against a resilient St. Joseph's squad. The No. 9 Eagles lost in overtime, 2-1, brining their record to 8-2. The sun beat down upon the players and the field, adding to the already intense atmosphere of the game.

Volleyball wins opening Patriot League matches

The women's volleyball team traveled to Worchester, Mass., Tuesday night to play the Holy Cross Crusaders. Although the team has not had much success at away games this season, the Eagles did not let their location shake their spirit last night. The match was the opener to the Patriot League schedule, and the ladies won 3-1, making their league record 1-0.

Women's soccer defeats George Mason Patriots, 3-1

The women's soccer squad triumphed 3-1 in Tuesday's game against area rival George Mason. With a record of 6-2, the Eagles are off to its best start since the 2004 season. The first half was an intense defensive battle. Neither team allowed the other to cross the midfield chalk.

Assistant wrestling coach wins worldwide recognition

AU wrestling gained worldwide recognition this past Tuesday thanks to assistant wrestling coach, Brad Vering. Vering won silver in the Senior-Wrestling World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. The assistant coach had previously won in the 2007 U.S. Nationals wrestling competition and the U.

Lady Eagles field hockey falls to Maryland Terps, 4-0

The AU Eagles battled the nationally ranked Maryland Terrapins in Wednesday's field hockey game. The crowds gathered in waves and lined the white fence surrounding the field to participate in the first ever "Phil Jacobs," a much-anticipated event by the American University community to show their support of AU athletics by filling the Jacobs Field.

Eagles end losing streak

The AU volleyball team put an end to its losing streak this weekend when it hosted the inaugural American Volleyball Tournament in Bender Arena. The tournament consisted of eight teams, four from the Patriot League and four from the Ivy League. Columbia was the first school to lose to American, putting the Eagles back on track after two unsuccessful weekends, losing previously to University North Carolina Chapel Hill and Villanova.

AU still undefeated: After 8 games, field hockey prevails

The No. 9 AU field hockey team continued on its winning streak this weekend, beginning with a 3-0 win against the Kent State Flashes on Saturday and ending with a 7-0 win against Northwestern Sunday. These wins bring the Eagles' record to 8-0. The Eagles started the game off strong when freshman Christine Fingerhuth scored the first goal nine minutes into play.

AU men's soccer suffers biggest loss since 1992 season

Despite strong efforts, the AU men's soccer team was unable to bring home a win during its Saturday game, losing 6-1 against the University of South Florida at the USF Soccer Stadium. Early into the game, the Eagles looked strong and promising. USF managed to score the first goal.

Away loss prompts home-turf success

After suffering a 2-1 loss in overtime on Friday to Towson University, the AU women's soccer team bounced back on Sunday with a 2-0 victory against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers. The Eagles currently have a record of 5-2. Friday's game was a defensive battle.

Sports brief: men's cross country still runs strong

The women's and men's AU cross country teams finished strong at the Navy Invitational 8K race Saturday. The men finished in fourth place, and the women finished in fifth place. On the men's team, standout runners included senior Steve Hallinan and junior Carlos Jamieson.
