The importance of finding Mr. Wright

·

Instead of making fun of or complaining about five different sports figures this week, I am instead going to focus my energy into praising one great one: David Wright. Being a Mets fan isn't the easiest thing in the world. Sure, they won a World Series in 1986, but since I was only 13 months old at the time, I didn't get to experience it.

'Limitless potential' propels women's swimming for PL tourney

·

With the Patriot League Championships scheduled for this weekend, the women's swim team has been hard at work preparing for the most important meet of the season. "When it comes down to it, it's all about this meet," junior captain Meghan Thiel said. "It is a reflection of what you did all season.

Tuesday night's win ties AU for third in the PL.

Women's hoops break streak with big win over Army

·

The AU women's basketball team broke a four-game losing streak in dramatic fashion, upsetting second-place Army 58-54 Tuesday night at Bender Arena. The victory puts the Eagles in a third-place tie in the PL with Holy Cross, while the loss is only the fifth of the season for the Black Knights.

Struggling women's hoops drop fourth straight with loss to Colgate

The AU women's basketball team fell again on Saturday afternoon, losing to Colgate 66-53 in Hamilton, N.Y. The defeat was the fourth straight for the Eagles, who have not won since a Jan. 24 victory at home against Navy. After scoring the game's first basket nearly two minutes into the first half, the Raiders would hold the lead throughout the contest.

Last-minute foul call saves men's basketball

After Colgate's Dan Gentile tipped in a miss by teammate Jon Simon with 0.2 seconds remaining, it appeared as though AU was doomed to suffer yet another agonizingly close Patriot League loss. However, Brian Gilmore ran along the baseline before attempting to inbound the ball, drawing defender Kyle Chones right into Arvydas Eitutavicius, who held his ground and drew a foul.

Wrestling drops weekend matches against Maryland, Old Dominion

In a familiar ending, the American University men's wrestling team dropped their fourth straight match on Sunday, losing to Old Dominion by a slim margin in the final bout. American was able to keep a 20-17 lead heading into the heavyweight match, but Old Dominion redshirt freshman Matt Pellar proved to be too much for redshirt junior Evan Murtaugh, who was pinned in 2:04 to give ODU the 23-20 win.

Track sends fresh legs to Thompson Invite

At the Thomson Invitation in Newark, Del., the men's track team took 4th place among division two schools and the women's team would take 5th. Perhaps hoping to save runners for the Patriot League Championship on Feb. 17, American University track coach Matt Centrowitz ran only three men - all freshmen - for the event.

Horrible conditions make Super Bowl worth

While executives at the NFL may have been concerned about the conditions in Miami, after years of seeing championship games played in domed stadiums and under pristine conditions, I was personally very happy to see "monsoon-like conditions" hit during the game.

Five Super Bowl ads that should have aired

Let's be honest: the Super Bowl this year was boring. There were more turnovers than the weekly two-hand touch game that I play in and Prince's halftime show would have been a great idea if it was still 1984 (or even 1999 for that matter, but party we did not).

Wrestling's Cannon holds it down at AU

Making the transition from a high school mat to one of the top Division I college wrestling programs on the East Coast would intimidate even the most talented freshman recruit. But rather than getting pinned under pressure, AU's Mike Cannon was able to take on the challenge.

Women's hoops loses third in a row

The AU women's basketball team lost its third game in a row Tuesday night, falling behind early in an eventual 70-57 loss to the Bucknell Bison. The defeat drops the Eagles to 4-5 in the Patriot League and 9-15 overall. The Bison scored the game's first basket only 24 seconds into the game and built an 8-0 lead before the Eagles could score their first hoop almost four minutes into the game.

Woes continue as men's basketball drops another close one

Andre Ingram led all scorers with 23 points, but was unable to connect on a game-tying three-pointer as Bucknell defeated AU, 69-66, on Tuesday night at Bender Arena. The game featured 19 lead changes, including four in the last 1:36. With AU down by two, Arvydas Eitutavicius was fouled while attempting a three-pointer and hit all three foul shots to put AU up 64-63.

First-half woes continued to plague the AU women's basketball team, as it was unable to overcome an 18-point halftime deficit in losing to Lehigh on Saturday, 67-60. The defeat drops the Eagles to 4-4 in the Patriot League and 9-13 overall on the season. The Mountain Hawks would score the game's opening basket only 19 seconds into the game and hold the lead throughout the contest.

Track keeps up winning ways at NYC invites

It was a big weekend for AU track, as the team split up to compete at the 100th Millrose Games and the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York. The men's team was living proof that teamwork pays off, as the unyielding 4x800 team took hold of the win this Friday at the Millrose games.

Wrestling falls late in tight match against Rutgers

The AU wrestlers fought hard but came up short in a one-point loss to Rutgers on Sunday, falling to the Scarlet Knights with a team score of 19-18. The dual meet started with an intense match between redshirt freshman Jasen Borshoff (125) and Ryan Jablonski.

Fennell paces indoor progress, stays ahead of competition

Running with the success his team has been having all winter, senior Brendan Fennell is quietly having himself a standout season with the AU men's indoor track team. Last weekend, the Pearl River, N.Y. native lapped the competition at the George Mason Patriot Games, winning the 1000 meter in 2:26.

For the love of the game: The Super Bowl is pure "Americana"

Often in today's world of football, most fans and analysts are consumed with numbers, statistics and highlight films of their favorite players. Talking heads on ESPN or Fox Sports spend hours breaking down every minute of a game. Questions such as, "How many touchdowns did this player score?" or "How many yards did this player gain today?" are more important than who won or lost a game.

Eagle sports brief: Men's hoops falls at Holy Cross

AU led by three at the half, but Holy Cross went on a 12-4 run at the start of the second half to rally for a 58-47 victory on Wednesday night in Worchester, Mass. The Eagles held conference leading-scorer Keith Simmons scoreless for the first 27 minutes of the game, but he hit a three-pointer with the score tied at 29 to give Holy Cross the lead for good.

Dawson, Dirk Diggler and Danza: The Hollywood All-Pro Team

It's Super Bowl week, and since nobody cares about two teams from the Midwest, here are my choices for the Hollywood All-Pro team, the best at every position from movies and television. Quarterback: Jonathan Moxon, West Canaan Coyotes There was a lot of competition at this position, from Steamin' Willie Beamen to Shane "Footsteps" Falco, but at the end of the day Moxon is the best movie quarterback of all time because of five little words: "I DON'T WANT YOUR LIFE.
