Eagles fly high at 'Phil Reeves,' defeat Bucknell 2-0

The AU men's soccer team defeated Bucknell 2-0 Saturday afternoon, picking up three vital points in the PL standings and improving their home record to 6-0-0. In the process, the Eagles climbed into the all-important fourth and final spot for the PL tournament, with two league games remaining.

Gymnasts tumble through financial woes, look to vault funding for team

Although American University's varsity sports get most of the funding and attention from the administration, the school's club sports are still going strong. Gymnastics, one such club team, is currently revamping their approach to their team's status. The differences between varsity and club teams are fairly basic.

Eagles end overtime drought in 5th straight home victory

The AU Eagles were able to put their overtime struggles behind them on Wednesday afternoon, recording a 2-1 victory in the extra period over the University of Pennsylvania at Reeves Field. Senior Sal Caccavale scored the game-winning goal to give the Eagles their fifth consecutive win at home this season.

Lady Eagles soccer blanked by Princeton

In just their second home loss this season, the AU women's soccer team was shutout by Princeton 3-0 at Reeves Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles were in a hole early as the Tigers went net on AU goalie Alison Doyle twice in the first seven minutes. Princeton's Diana Matheson scored on an assist by Jen Om a little over a minute into the first half.

Unexpected matchup brings unlimited talent to ALCS

The Detroit Tigers and the Oakland A's are set to square off in what might be the least predicted ALCS in recent memory. Of the two teams, Oakland appeared in the ALCS most recently in 1990, when Mark McGwire still looked like Marky Mark. Despite the unlikely participants, the 2006 ALCS promises to be one of the better playoff series since the Red Sox beat the Yankees in 2004.

Men's soccer continues home cooking over HC

The AU men's soccer team continued their success at Reeves Field with a 4-2 win over Holy Cross on Saturday. The win was their fourth consecutive victory at home this season and first win of any kind since a 2-1 win over Loyola (Md.) on Sept. 10. Coming off of a 0-4-2 month-long road trip that included four straight heartbreaking double overtime losses, the Eagles were looking to get back on the winning track.

Field hockey overcomes the elements, stays undefeated in Patriot League play

Tiffany Carter and Jesika Pufnock both scored their first goals of the season to lead No. 15 AU (9-4-0) over Bucknell (4-6-0) on Saturday by a score of 2-0. Coming off a 1-0 loss at Albany last weekend, it didn't take very long for the Eagles to get their offense back on track on a cold, rainy day at William I.

Victorious weekend for Eagles in women soccer

The AU women's soccer team had a very successful weekend, picking up their first two PL victories with a 1-0 win over Holy Cross on Friday followed by a 2-1 triumph over Army on Sunday. The two wins for the Eagles improved the Eagles to 8-4-0 on the year and more importantly gave them a 2-1-0 record in the competitive Patriot League.

Eagle sports this weekend: What to watch for

Field Hockey (8-4 overall, 1-0 Patriot League, tied for first place): 10/7 vs. Bucknell Coming off a 1-0 loss at Albany last weekend, the AU field hockey team will return home for its second PL game of the year Saturday at 1 p.m. AU hasn't been as dominant as they were the past two seasons, losing four games to non-conference opponents already this year, including a 4-3 loss to Richmond at home two weekends ago.

The AU women's volleyball team won their first two Patriot League matches this weekend, besting Holy Cross, 3-0, on Friday and Army, 3-1, on Saturday. The Eagles rolled to an easy victory over the Crusaders on Friday, holding the advantage in kills and hitting percentage.

Women's soccer falls to No. 25 Navy, 2-0

The AU women's soccer team fell to No. 25 Navy on Saturday, losing 2-0 in their first Patriot League match of the season. The Eagles were able to hold the Midshipmen to a scoreless tie for the first 30 minutes of play. Navy's Sam Schroth assisted a CiAnna Weikle header in the 32nd minute to put the Midshipmen up 1-0.

Slide continues into Patriot League play for men's soccer

Winless in their previous four matches, the AU men's soccer team continued their downslide on Saturday with a 4-0 loss at Lehigh. The game remained scoreless through the 17th minute, when Lehigh's Kyle Evans scored off an assist from Robert Quinlan to put the Mountain Hawks up 1-0.
