Field hockey's Jennings picked to coach U.S. national team

Field hockey head coach Steve Jennings took a temporary hiatus from his AU coaching responsibilities for the U.S. national team this past month, helping lead the squad into competition against the best teams in the world at the 2006 World Cup in Madrid. Coach Jennings was named as the team manager for the international tournament, the only collegiate coach named to the coaching staff.

Cross country gets literal for weekend road trip to Oregon, Virginia meets

The AU cross country team split up this weekend, with half of the men's team traveling to Eugene, Ore., to compete in the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Friday, while the rest of the team ran at the George Mason Invitational in Manassas, Va. Senior Conor Lanz led the AU contingent to a 12th place finish in the 8K event in Oregon.

Senior captain Sal Caccavale plans to pursue soccer professionally after hanging up his Eagle uniform.

Soccer captain hopes 'goal'-getter attitude translates to success at AU and beyond

He is none other than senior captain Sal Caccavale, a fixture on the AU men's soccer team for the last four seasons and a main reason why the Eagles have been successful throughout his career.

Women's soccer Back-to-back home wins this past weekend over Richmond and Robert Morris helped the AU women's soccer team improve their overall record to 6-3-1. After being held scoreless for three of their four previous games, the Eagles offense came to life scoring five goals in just two games en route to posting 3-0 and 2-1 wins, respectively.

Watching the Saints' emotional victory over the Falcons on Monday night, one thing became abundantly clear to me: I am glad I am not a Houston Texans fan. While Reggie Bush hasn't been All-World like many expected after the Saints drafted him No. 2 overall in last April's NFL draft, he has unquestionably outperformed the player the Texans drafted before him, Mario Williams.

The AU men's soccer team was able to hold their opponents to a single goal this weekend, however they could not find the net themselves as they dropped both games of the New Mexico Youth Soccer Association Classic in overtime to lower their record to 3-5-2.

Thursday night the American University Women's Volleyball team improved to 2-0 in Patriot League play and 9-6 overall with a win over the host Lafayette Leopards. The strong four-set showing by the Eagles led to their third victory in a row and fifth in six matches.

First home loss snaps field hockey streak

The 11th-ranked AU Eagles (7-3-0) fell behind early and were unable to overcome a 3-1 halftime deficit on Sunday, falling to the No. 21 Richmond Spiders (5-3-0) by a score of 3-2 at the William I. Jennings Recreational Complex. The Spiders got off to a fast start against AU, scoring on a deflection off a penalty corner.

The Eagles have dropped three of their last four games.

Women's soccer looks to stop slump after loss to GW; record now 4-3-1

After starting the season 4-0, the Lady Eagles soccer team has fallen into a slump. Tuesday afternoon's 2-1 loss at George Washington was the third loss in four matches for the team, whose record has dropped to 4-3-1. Although the Eagles dominated in possession, corner kicks and shots, a Colonial goal with four minutes to play proved fatal to the struggling team from American.

For some freshmen, it takes a few weeks to adjust to life away at college. For Savannah Graybill, it took 47 minutes and 28 seconds. Graybill, a forward on the AU field hockey team, came off the bench in the first game of the season at Cal and scored two goals.

The American University women's soccer team faced Columbia on Friday afternoon, battling the Lions to an overtime finish that resulted in a scoreless tie. The Eagles had trouble controlling possession throughout the first half, trading sides with the Lions as both teams made several shots without scoring.

Men's soccer ties Lafayette in PL title game rematch

The AU men's soccer team tied Lafayette in a rematch of their PL title game from a season ago. The result dropped the Eagles to 0-0-1 in league play and 3-4-1 overall. In front of a crowd of just under 400 spectators in Easton, Pa., the two teams that had combined to win four of the last five PL championships lived up to the hype of being among the top teams in the league.

Field hockey dominates home opener; 3-0 victory extends winning streak to six

Irene Schickhardt scored two second-half goals and the AU defense held Towson to just three shots in a 3-0 victory on Saturday. After seven straight away games, the Eagles (6-2) started out their first home game tentatively, with Towson (5-2) controlling play for the first five minutes.
