AU cuts golf and tennis programs

·

The AU Athletic Department announced it will cut the men's golf and men's and women's tennis programs after this season, according to a statement released Thursday evening. AU will honor scholarships already given to those students should they decide to stay at AU, but in the future scholarships for those programs, part of AU's total of 80 sports scholarships, will be redirected to other sports that do not meet NCAA maximum scholarship limits, the statement indicates.

AU runs to best-ever PL finish

·

AU Men's and Women's Indoor Track teams didn't finish the weekend's Patriot League Championships with the most points, but they could be called the competition's most efficient squads. Eagle runners placed first in 10 of their 13 events as the women finished fifth and the men finished third, their best-ever finish in the PL Championships.

AU still ordinary where it counts

Ever since the Eagles swooped down on the Patriot League, they've been a dominant force, right? Well, that is the running narrative around Nebraska Avenue. And yeah, there's some merit to it. AU has won a plurality of league championships since it entered the league when.

For Eagle wrestlers, 1 out of 3 could be worse

In wrestling, if you can't make weight on match day, you can't compete. AU head coach Mark Cody wanted to be sure that his wrestlers could make weight on three straight days, since they will have to at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championships as well as the national tournament, so he scheduled matches this weekend for three consecutive days.

Eagles edge Leopards, stay in PL pack

There have been prettier games than AU's 58-56 win over Lafayette Sunday. But at this point in the season, a win is a win. Senior forward Chanel Hunt played her strongest game of the season, scoring 13 points, pulling down 9 rebounds and leading a controlled Eagles offense that completed a 10-point second-half comeback to knock off the lesser opponent and stay in contention for the third seed in the upcoming Patriot League tournament.

Good and bad of black legacies

You would be hard-pressed to find a sport whose history over the past 100 years has not provided some meaningful juncture in the struggle for the equality and recognition of blacks in the 20th century. From baseball to football, and more recently golf, diversity in sports is reflected in many of the stunning achievements of pioneering black athletes who graced sports with style and athleticism.

Kuykendall to start pro career in D.C.

In most sports, athletes traversing from college to the pros might be sent clear across the country. And in soccer, it is common for American players to venture even farther, plying their trade in one of Europe's or South America's numerous leagues.

First-place hopes start to fade for Men's B-ball

A week ago, the AU Men's Basketball team sat just one free throw away from tying Holy Cross atop the Patriot League standings. How quickly things change. First in war, first in peace, but last in the NL East?

Many Washingtonians are unfamiliar with what to expect from the return of baseball to the District in 48 days, but the team is already preparing itself to make a splash in the Potomac despite an unknown team and a terrible record from last year. The first test for the new team will be drawing fans to see a team noticeably devoid of big names and a deep bench.

Short-handed AU ekes out 23-21win

AU Wrestling head coach Mark Cody got together with his staff last weekend to hatch a plan to challenge a full-sized Maryland squad the Eagles hadn't beaten in 20 years. The lineup shuffle paid off Sunday as the Eagles (3-9) overcame their customary forfeit deficit to break an 11-match losing streak to the Terps (3-11-1) at Bender Arena, 23-21.

AU offense shines, thanks to Colgate

AU Women's Basketball head coach Melissa McFerrin told her team that because of its struggling offense, it needs to keep opponents in the 50s in order to win. On Sunday afternoon, the team did that and more. The Eagles defeated Colgate, 73-59, at Bender Arena in their most complete performance of the season.

AU expected to lead PL in poll

Although Patriot League action hasn't begun yet, AU is already on top of the rankings for Women's Tennis. Sure, it's on top because it's first alphabetically, but with the team winning back-to-back Patriot League titles, there isn't any reason it shouldn't be the choice for a hat trick.

Struggling Hunt leads from the bench

She led the AU Women's Basketball team in scoring last year. She was an All-Patriot League player in the preseason. She was the glue that held a team together through a coaching change in the offseason. 2004-2005 was supposed to be Chanel Hunt's season. And then this season happened.

Bush-league Pro Bowl just too amateur

With the Super Bowl finally over and the cries of dynasty slowly fading, sports fans are faced with the annual disgrace known as the Pro Bowl. The Pro Bowl - or NFL All-Star Game, if you will - is the ridiculous spectacle put on every year in an attempt to showcase the best talent in the NFL.
