AU runners come up big in New York

·

School and personal records were smashed last weekend as AU's Indoor Track and Field teams had strong showings in two national events, the teams' last competition before the Patriot League Championships. In the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York, senior Sean Duffy made history in the men's 3,000-meter, finishing fourth with a time of 8:02.

Super Bowl commentary: Patriots win creates rifts

·

The New England Patriots defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 24-21, in one of the best games in recent memory. With seemingly half of AU's population from either "outside Boston" or "outside Philly," it was one of the most divisive games seen on campus since the Red Sox-Yankees series last year.

AU sweeps matches at GMU

·

Mark Cody's first year as head coach of the AU wrestling team in 2003 saw the Eagles prevail over an overconfident George Mason squad in a dual meet decided by tie-breaking criteria. As the frustrated Patriots left the gym floor, their coaches suggested they would never lose to AU again.

Sideline scholars: Cross has faith in purple

What's in a name? Not much, if you're the AU Eagles. And a whole lot if you're the Holy Cross Crusaders. Holy Cross has beaten its fair share of Patriot League men's basketball teams over the last five seasons. Luckily - or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it - I haven't had the luxury of seeing most of these games.

Ladies split PL weekend

Following a pattern that began several weeks ago, the AU Women's Basketball team split its weekend, defeating Army, 51-47, before losing to Holy Cross, 56-47. The Eagles lost to the Crusaders, who are undefeated in the league, after taking a 27-19 lead with a 14-0 run to start the second half.

Holy Cross beats AU in close finish

AU Men's Basketball didn't look anything like the team Holy Cross smashed by 24 points two weeks ago in Sunday's home rematch with the Crusaders. But for all their improvements, failures to convert opportunities set the Eagles back in overtime, and they lost, 76-67.

PATRIOTs vs. EAGLES

Ian Quillen Eagles: 23 Patriots: 21 On paper, New England is the only choice. But that doesn't make it the right one. Terrell Owens will play, catch a touchdown and then re-injure his knee, jeopardizing his career and leading to a Pats comeback. Adam Vinatieri, whose previous two title-winning kicks came with the game tied, will miss from 48 yards and time expiring.

Women's b-ball falls short, 62-59

The AU Women's Basketball team should have lost in regulation at Bender Arena Wednesday night. With the score tied at 53, Maryland-Eastern Shore guard Ashley Chase held for the final shot, drove the lane, and then dished off to forward Kristi Veltkamp, who stood alone on the low block.

The game that will never be

No one likes to go through life saying, "Coulda. Woulda. Shoulda." But for argument's sake, I will. Ten days ago, I attentively rooted for a Roethlisberger-Vick shootout, a Super Bowl Sunday of the Cowher Scour and More-a Mora. My hope of a Steelers-Falcons Super Bowl was not to be.

Tennis serves in new year

AU Tennis wrapped up its first month of the spring season last weekend as the men outlasted George Washington, 5-2, and the women stumbled at Penn State, 7-0. The men (2-1) didn't manage a doubles victory but took five matches from the Colonials in singles play.

Students prepare for Super Bowl parties

For some it is the culmination of the ultimate sports season; for others it's just a time to watch some of the world's best commercials. It's the Super Bowl - one of college students' favorite events. At AU and all over the country, students will gather on Sunday night to watch one of sports' and television's greatest spectacles.

Nat fever running rampant in District

You can feel it. Slowly but surely, it's building. There are Curly-Q "W" hats on the street, whispers of how many innings Livan Hernadez will be able to pitch this year, how Jose Vidro will play on the grass instead of that rug up in Montreal, what the mascot will look like and how RFK will hold up this season.

Eagle grapplers split weekend duals

After a heartbreaking loss against Sacred Heart on Friday, the AU Men's wrestling team rebounded to defeat Wagner and split its weekend series. Sophomore Dwayne Hash-Barberis and freshman Josh Glenn picked up pins, and junior Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov and senior Daniel Waters each registered technical falls en route to a 34-21 victory over Wagner.

Eagles storm to league No. 2

After sweeping a pair of Patriot League home games this weekend, the AU Men's Basketball team isn't about to get ahead of itself. Having come into the weekend tied for third in the PL, the Eagles are now tied for second with Bucknell, with PL leader Holy Cross coming to D.

Women swimmers push AU to No. 2

It may have been the last home competition for AU Swimming and Diving seniors, but it was women underclassmen who took home the victories as the Eagles placed second in a triangular meet on Friday at Reeves Aquatic Center. First- and second-year women swimmers got four of AU's six first-place finishes as the men's and women's teams beat Howard but were topped by Old Dominion.

The AU Women's Basketball team split its second straight weekend, registering a road win at Bucknell Friday night before suffering one of its worst losses of the season, losing 67-45 at Colgate Sunday afternoon. "Today was just a poor effort," said Eagles coach Melissa McFerrin of Sunday's game.

NHL, if you come back, get new ideas

As a few of you may have already noticed, there is no professional hockey being played this season. This is a travesty. With the NHL players and owners entangled in a legal battle over salary caps and revenue sharing, the world is being deprived of one of the most exciting spectacles in all of sports.

Eagles look to stop Bison stampede

Friday night's AU Men's Basketball clash with Patriot League favorite Bucknell had been earmarked long before the season started. But with AU (10-7) getting demolished by Holy Cross, 80-56, Monday and sitting tied for third in the league at 3-2, and with Bucknell cruising on an 11-game winning streak and a PL-leading 5-0 league record, the game at Bender Arena could take on a do-or-die feel for AU.

AU wrestler from Uzbekistan ranks No. 3

AU wrestler Muzzafar Abdurakhmanov says he's "kind of lucky," but that may be an understatement. The 24-year-old junior is ranked No. 3 in the country, has won a pair of national junior college championships and toppled All-Americans while bringing attention to AU's wrestling revival.

Women's B-ball: Finding the point without Hadavi

A well-oiled machine. A finely tuned instrument. A cohesive unit. A team bound for the NCAA tournament. These four statements were all uttered early in the season about the AU Women's Basketball team. Playing under their fiery, vibrant new coach Melissa McFerrin, the consistency of seniors Chanel Hunt and Joanna Barnes, and the electric-quick and sharpshooting newcomer Tala Hadavi, the Eagles were ready to take the next step and play deep into March.
