Soccer falls in pivitol match v. Bisons

The AU Men's Soccer team suffered its most disappointing, if not most damaging, loss of the season Sunday, losing a 1-0 Patriot League clash at home to Bucknell University on the Eagles' Senior Day. The Eagles dominated possession and scoring opportunities, outshooting the Bison 23-8. But Bucknell stayed organized and confident its game plan - stealing a goal through the PL's co-scoring leader, Scott Visnic.

Column: Let the post-season wars continue

While early November will mark the end of the 2004 MLB season - one that may or may not feature a ticker-tape parade through Boston - it will also herald the beginning of a truly fascinating second season. The Hot Stove League, which lasts from November to March, is the name given to the off-season's flurry of big trades and exorbitant free-agent signings. It features the same nail-biting tension, high-stakes match-ups and record-breaking numbers as the regular season, even if those match-ups are between agents and general managers, and those numbers are usually preceded by dollar signs.

XC wins third straight

Pat MacAdie placed second in a field of 322 runners at the Penn State National Invite Saturday, leading AU's cross-country team to its third straight title of the 2004 season. The Eagles (49 points) outpaced 37 other teams. Pennsylvania was a distant second with a total of 83 points.

Sideline Scholars: The greatest game of our generation

8:15 p.m.: As I sit down to watch the last game of this bizarre series, I have no clue what to expect. I don't think I've ever seen any game with such possible historic consequences before. The Red Sox could be the first team to come back from 3-0 down at the expense of the Yankees. Wow. 2-0-0-4 is hard to chant. What could happen in Game 7 to top this thing off? A Sox win would do it I guess.

AU roofs GW 3-1

In a crosstown non-conference showdown against George Washington Tuesday night, the AU Volleyball team cruised to a 3-1 victory with a potent .302 hitting percentage. With both teams having reached the midpoint in their seasons, the clash in Bender Arena was important for yearly District bragging rights and recruiting battles.

Soccer Brief: Soccer gets kicked by Loyola 5-0

American University's women soccer team lost their fourth game of the season on Wednesday against Loyola (Md.) by a score of 5-0. The game, which was played in Baltimore got off to an early start when Loyola's Courtney Arikian scored in the 7th minute.

Eagles slip and slide past Loyola, 2-0

On a damp and dreary afternoon at Reeves Field Wednesday, the AU Men's Soccer controlled play through most of their clash with Loyola. But it took a single flash of brilliance from sophomore midfielder Salvatore Caccavale to ensure that the match ended brightly for the Eagles. Caccavale scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 72nd minute on a world-class 25-yard strike that swerved inside the left post and past Loyola 'keeper Justin Chelland.

Golf falls 40 off par

The AU Men's Golf team completed its second tournament of the fall season in 12th place at the Pirate Fall Intercollegiate at the Bradford Creek Golf Club. The Eagles finished with a combined score of 904 (300-306-298) to finish 39 shots off the pace, 40 strokes over par. The men were led by sophomore Todd Shagin, who carded a 2-over 218 (76-71-71) to finish in a tie for 12th place overall, eight strokes off the lead. Shagin closed with matching rounds under par for the first time this season. Afterward, he talked about being able to come back after a tough first day.

Again, PL is no match

After seeing its seven-game winning streak dissolve in a grueling match against Georgetown last week, the AU volleyball squad rebounded quickly with two Patriot League road victories at Lehigh and Lafayette. The victories extended the Eagles PL wins to 55 games over the past four seasons. Eagles coach Barry Goldberg, however, said conference foes have been gearing up to play their best against his team making every game more difficult.

Sideline Scholars: How Beantown can cure the curse of the Bambino

Dear Boston, Start from scratch. Get rid of Pedro, rebuild Fenway (keep the monster), and finally trade for the Babe. Pay whatever they want, just get him back in white and red. In all seriousness, you can win the championship without the Babe, but until you are willing to totally let the notion that you are cursed go, you will never win.

Sports Brief: Field Hockey shut out Holy Cross, part of a season-long onslaught on the PL

The AU Women's field hockey team continued its incredible season on Saturday, dominating Holy Cross 4-0. Sophomore Camila Infante netted two goals in a game that saw the Eagles outshoot the Crusaders 19-4. Freshman Maggie Hall and senior Javiera Villagra also scored for the Eagles, who improved their record to 13-2-0.

Swimming is bigger than AU believes

Olympic swimmers Michael Phelps, Lenny Krayzelburg, and Ian Crocker appeared Sept. 10 as part of the Disney "Swim With the Stars" event at the University of Maryland. "Swimming has gotten more attention than it has ever gotten before," Krayzelburg said. He said this event will "revolutionize the sport."

Women are victorious in homecoming

The strike pair of junior Marcella Ricupero and sophomore Jana Lee has scored so many clutch goals for the AU Women's Soccer team, it's almost getting redundant. But as long as the Eagles keep winning Patriot League matches, no one will be complaining. Both helped save the day in a crucial 2-1 comeback win over PL foes Lehigh on homecoming Saturday at Reeves Field.

Eagles strike blow to Colgate and fly to top in league standings

While the field hockey and Women's soccer teams have dazzled AU fans with their superb seasons, the Men's Soccer team has quietly been building momentum and a Patriot League lead. In Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday night, the Eagles kept on building, riding junior midfielder Ryan Boyd's first goal of the year to a 1-0 away win over PL rivals Colgate.

Sideline Scholars: Eagles are a little more than No. 7

By the time you wake up, they have practiced for close to three hours, spent time in the training room and probably already made it in and out of TDR. They are AU's seventh-ranked Field Hockey team. Not No. 7 on the East Coast or in the region - in the nation. To make that more real, Florida State is the No. 7 football team in the nation and Duke is the preseason men's basketball No. 7.

AU scores first-ever win on Crusaders

David Marut probably didn't think he'd have to wait until mid-October to score his first two goals of the season. But after Saturday's performance, the senior forward probably won't complain. Marut's first two goals couldn't have come at a better time, sparking the AU Men's Soccer team's 5-1 rout of Patriot League rival Holy Cross, who, until Saturday, had never lost to AU. The Crusaders now lead the series, 3-1-1.
