Countdown

The first of a new weekly segment called "Countdown," in which The Eagle sports staff will list the "Top 10" of a particular issue. Many of the topics will deal with AU sports; others will touch on college athletics and professional sports. This week's debut counts down the "Top 10 Sports Figures Who Went to College Inside the Beltway.

Eagles score first NCAA berth

The AU Field Hockey team defeated Quinnipiac 4-1 on Tuesday, Nov. 11 in a play-in game in College Park, Md. The win propels AU into the NCAA Div. I Tournament, where it will play Duke in the first round on Saturday, Nov. 15.

Field Hockey takes PL title

Both teams in Saturday's Patriot League Field Hockey championship made it there by the slimmest of margins. No. 19 AU got the berth with a 3-2 overtime win over No. 24 Lafayette in the semifinals. Holy Cross finalized its spot in a similar way by beating Bucknell 2-1 in overtime. It was no surprise that the title match finished any differently.

Swimming and Diving teams

Despite putting up a strong fight, both the Men's and Women's Swimming teams lost to Army in the season's first Patriot League match-up on Saturday. The afternoon was highlighted by AU senior Dominick Szabo's record-breaking performances. Szabo broke pool records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, the latter of which had stood for nine years.

Lady Eagles go down and out

AU Women's Soccer fell to Navy, 4-1, in the Patriot League Championship on Reeves Field Sunday afternoon, ending the Eagles' hopes of back-to-back league titles and a return to the NCAA tournament. Navy forward Amelia Sheveland's two goals in the 26th and 80th minutes sandwiched a Navy scoring barrage that didn't quite reflect the match on the pitch.

Who are your NBA tip-off favorites?

The leaves are falling once again, and you know what that means - the NBA season is upon us. The biggest stories of the off-season were Kobe Bryant's impending rape trial, the arrival of 18-year-old NBA savior LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers' signing of Karl Malone and Gary Payton.

Wrestling team grapples to win

Wrestling head coach Mark Cody has reason to be excited as his team prepares to improve upon last year's two win season. "We've brought in a good recruiting class, but we are going to redshirt all of our new kids," Cody said. "We're hoping to see some improvement from last year's team.

Diving in a new season

And they're off. The Swimming and Diving team season has officially begun, and AU's teams are ready than ever to leave the Patriot League and the NCAA in their wake. Head coach Mark Davin wholeheartedly believes in his teams and knows the results of their hard work will pay off soon.
