The rainy weather at the beginning of the game between AU and Loyola seemed indicative of both teams' seasons so far. Both AU and Loyola had been early favorites to compete for titles in their respective divisions, but at Saturday's game both teams got off to a lackadaisical start with a record of one win and three losses.
It's a fact of life that accidents happen, and for AU Tennis star Katarina Kollarova, she's most thankful that she "accidentally" picked up a tennis racket and began what is quickly becoming one of the most dominant tennis careers in the Patriot League.
Sports briefs on the Men's Golf team's win at the AU Classic and senior Laura Miller being awarded the PL Defensive player of the week.
AU Volleyball is 32-0 in two seasons of Patriot League play, sweeping all but six of those matches, and has made the NCAA Tournament the past two years. The team returns four players this year who last fall earned all-league honors, including Karla Kucerkova, the 2002 Verizon Academic Player of the Year.
AU Women's Soccer fans probably expected AU sophomore midfielder Simone Konig to be the offensive force in Wednesday's match. Instead, it was GW forward Kim Warren, who scored one goal and started two others en route to a Colonial victory, 3-1.
Sideline Scholar columnist Jesse Epstein remarks on American professional sports since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
AU Men's Soccer scored the first goal Maryland has conceded this season on Sunday. But it wasn't enough to uproot the No. 1 Terps, who dismissed AU 2-1 in the Maryland/Adidas classic at College Park.
Sports columnist Nick Chin writes on big events in the U.S. Open tennis tournament.
The Women's Tennis Team opened its fall season in respectable form at the Martha Thorn Invitational Tournament in Morgantown, W.Va., this past weekend. Playing in singles and doubles against opponents from other universities, the Eagles posted several strong showings, led by senior Katarina Kollarova's remarkable trip to the tournament finals for her group.
Sports briefs from around campus: the Womens' Soccer team and AU Field Hockey.
The NFL kicked off with the NFC last Thursday as the Washington Redskins took on the New York Jets. Now it is time to turn attention to the AFC with whom to watch and who will go all the way. The AFC is a much harder conference to decipher than the NFC, but here are my picks: the Miami Dolphins, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Tennessee Titans, the Oakland Raiders, the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens.
AU Volleyball went 1-2 this weekend at the Zips Invitational in Akron, Ohio. The Eagles (2-4) scraped by host Akron 3-2 (24-30, 30-27, 26-30, 33-31, 17-15) on Friday. However, they dropped matches 3-0 on Saturday to No. 9 Penn St. (30-19, 30-25, 30-24) and Pittsburgh (32-30, 30-28, 30-19).
AU Men's Soccer finished a respectable but disappointing second place in the D.C. College Cup, routing George Washington 3-0 on Friday before drawing host Georgetown 1-1 on Sunday.
The football season is at last upon us and it is time to take a hard look at the upcoming season with an overview of what to look for, who the division contenders are, who will still be playing in January and who will win the Super Bowl. My picks to make it to the playoffs this year from the NFC are: The Philadelphia Eagles, the Green Bay Packers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Seattle Seahawks, the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Giants.
The Women's Field Hockey team dominated the Longwood Lancers, earning a victory for their first game of the season, defeating the Lancers, 4-0. Last Sunday's game at Georgetown showcased sophomore Shannon Goans with one goal and one assist.
There were several factors that made Friday afternoon not exactly an ideal day for playing soccer. After waiting out a 45-minute rain delay, the Lady Eagles took to a flawed field to open their season with a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md.
Sports columnist Jesse Epstein discusses the recent drug problems facing college sports and its effect, or lack thereof, at AU.
Briefs from the Eagle Sports Desk on administrative turmoil in AU's athletic department.
It was a banner season for AU Cross Country in 2002 as Samia Akbar qualified for the NCAA championships and the Men's and Women's teams each won their first Patriot League titles. This fall, they are hoping to do it again. Practice begins today for AU Cross Country in the hills of Northwest Washington as the men's and women's squads look to build on last year's success.
