Six teams: NFL's worst

·

The Oakland Raiders are a mess both on and off the field. JaMarcus Russell has not turned into the franchise quarterback that management thought he would be. Russell has a career quarterback rating of 47.1 and is completing well under 50 percent of his passes. On top of that, his throws miss wide-open receivers by about 15 yards.

Volleyball's year may be determined Friday

·

Despite losing to the College of William and Mary, the AU volleyball team is more concerned with their next match against Army at West Point on Friday. The Black Knights are AU’s biggest rival and toughest competition in the Patriot League. A loss to them could all but destroy any hopes of winning this year’s Patriot League title.

JUMPING UP— Kelsey Brasher jumps up for a ball during AU’s 2-0 win over conference rival Holy Cross on Friday. The win keeps AU perfect in the Patriot League with a 2-0 conference record. AU will play Colgate University on Saturday, who is in the basement of the conference. AU is 7-7 on the year.

Women’s soccer wins

·

AU women’s soccer holds sole possession of the top spot in the Patriot League with a 2-0 win over conference rival Holy Cross Friday at their Phil Reeves event.

BANDING TOGETHER — AU volleyball defeated their conference rival Navy Friday night 3-0. The team never trailed in the game and cruised to an easy win. Their next game is against William and Mary Tuesday night.

No two years the same in NFL

Barring injury, you can always count on Tom Brady or Peyton Manning to be at the top of the passing statistics, but the same cannot be said for NFL as a whole, as almost no team is the same every year.

NO MATCH — AU’s Kirstin Gephart reaches for a ball during the Eagles loss to the University of Maryland. The Eagles, while a strong team overall, were no match for the Terrapins. It is no surprise, since UMD is the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. The team plays Holy Cross next on Oct. 3.

UMD defeats AU 3-0

AU field hockey trailed early and was never able to gain momentum against No. 1 University of Maryland on Tuesday, losing 3-0. The UMD Terrapins immediately controlled the tempo of the match in the first half, dominating possession of the ball. Two minutes after the start of the game Katie O’Donnell of Maryland scored an unassisted goal, forcing the Eagles into an uphill battle against the defending NCAA champions. “We gave up a very disheartening goal,” Assistant Head Coach Sarah Thorn Krombolz said. “We have to take ownership of our defensive circle and that in no way should have been a goal if we did that.” Maryland’s early goal jumped started the Eagles defense. AU restricted the Terrapins to four shots on goal and two penalty corners in the first half. Eagles goalie Alyssa Poorman made a diving save in the tenth minute, one of two impressive saves for the match.
